I have decided to regrip my putter. I have never regripped a golf club in my life. Is it something that is easy to tackle first try, or is it worth it to pay someone who knows what they are doing to do it?

Furthermore, what does a place like Golfsmith charge for a regrip?

Lastly...what kind of grip do you like? I am torn between going with a thin or thick one.

I regrip all my own clubs - including putter - and I'd say it would be better to have someone else do it for just one club. It only costs ~$3 + the price of the grip to have it done at the store. You'd spend that much or more just buying the grip tape. Also, putter grips can be a bit tricky because you really have to get it on there perfectly square. However, if you already have a vise to hold your club while you work on it and you are interested in gripping more clubs in the future, it may be worth it to go ahead and do it yourself. But, like I said, a putter regrip may be a bit tricky for your first time.

That is totally up to you and what you feel is comfortable in your hands. Keep in mind that you (or whoever regrips your club) can put extra wraps of tape under a grip to make it larger. If you like the feel of a thinner grip, but want a bit more size this is the way to go.

I regrip all my own clubs accept the putter. IMO, the only way to do a good job on a putter grip is with an alignment jig. It's is just more cost effective to pay someone the $3.00 to do it with the right tools... than buy the "right" tools and do it yourself.

But to each their own.

Thanks. This is the kind of stuff I was hoping to hear. It seems like it might be one of those things that would be worthwhile to get someone else to do, particularly if it doesn't cost that much.

I agree with the previous posts, at this stage of your regripping, have a pro do it for you....for grip type, I just regripped mine with the Golf Pride Optik, Red and love it; its thicker than normal , but not quite as thick as the larger ones, great for the larger hands.

I use a level to regrip putters.

  • Put the putter in a vise with a shaft clamp, tighten a little.
  • Use the level to make sure the putter face is vertical. Tighten into place.
  • After sliding the grip on, use the level of make sure the thumb side of the grip is horizontal at multiple points along the grip.
Never had a problem.

Never thought of that, what do you use just a plumbers torpedo level?

Something like that. It's a Stanley two-way level about 8 inches long.

Well worth it.

I suppose that I'm very fortunate in that there are two local shops that can do this sort of thing in minutes plus there is a Dicks Sporting Goods nearby that can as well. I recently tried an oversized grip for a while and it was interesting. It helped eliminate "wristiness". I traded the putter for the one in my sig line which has the factory BabyT grip...a slender grip. I like it very well....great feel. It's the sort of thing that you can afford to play around with and see what you like.
