I rarely have to play behind a fivesome at my home course (public muni). But, I work nights, I tend to have early to mid-afternoon t-times. I usually see 5somes coming off of 18 when I'm arriving. There are a ton of senior guys that play in the morning, and they will often let 5 play together. A lot of good golfers grouped together. These guys are not hacks.

What I don't like seeing, and what I may run into, is a 5some in front of me that has 4 guys in carts and 1 dude walking. I hate being behind 5 regardless--I rarely play in a group with more than 3. I don't know if he simply needs/wants his exercise or he didn't want to pay the $13 for an 18hole cart. It doesn't seem fair to anyone in the group. The riders are hopefully moving quicker than the walker. . .if not, it doesn't really matter anyway.

Our course allows it sometimes early in the morning and when the starter know the group will play relatively fast.

I played in LA area and walked on Saturday morning and I joined a 4 some that had carts and I walked as the fifth player and we played without holding anybody up behind us.

i find that no matter how slow the course is that day, 5 balls on the putting surface is a bit too much.

I have heard the good and the bad on 5 somes but I did like the thought of all of them must have carts no walkers. We do sometimes use 5 somes now and if they fall behind the marshal warns them once and the second time asks them to pick up the balls and move ahead. this works usually.

    • This isn't going to show you lateral dispersion at all. It's basically just a radar (for speed) launch monitor. It doesn't measure spin or anything like that. Not even launch direction.

    • Interesting changes. The idea of relegation and promotion have always been there in a different form (getting and losing your card etc and qualifying for bigger events) but it looks like they want to define it better for top tier events. The Tour has always had A and B level events (and even lower). It will be interesting what they choose as the Challenger Series events and whether some tournaments go to the Challenger Series that used to be prestigious. Not sure how the networks will take to this knowing they have “Challenger” Series events defined that way now. Also, I’m not happy that John Henry and Theo Epstein are involved. Look what Henry has done to the Red Sox.
