Where is the best place to put lead tape on wedges? What does tape do all across the back? Where should I start experimenting with this?

Posted
this will alter the center of gravity and the swingweight of the club

I find it useful on wedges, but honestly you'll need a great deal of tape to make any considerable changes to the clubs

I think you'll see more of a difference in putters and drivers. Wedges and irons, well, not so much. Unless you put a lot on.

I dont even find it useful on putters, like I said before you need so MUCH tape to make a big jump in gram weight

When I had my putter cut down about 2", I lost a lot of feeling and weight. Adding a couple inches of lead tape to it did wonders for me. My stroke felt a lot better and it didn't feel like I was swinging at it.

I personaly wouldnt put it on my wedges but sometimes when im putting and leaving putts short i put two strips on my putter it helps you get the ball to the hole.

you would need a lot of tape to make any significant differace on your wedges but the putter thing works.

HOW MUCH TAPE WAS THAT?

if you are talking about a scotty that's 20 grams of weight, you got that back with tape alone?

I put 2 strips of lead tape along the bottom of my putter. It's a Scotty Newport, so I'd say its 4 or so inches long? That comes to 8 inches of lead tape.

I'm sure it's not back to the exact specs of what the Scotty was but it's to my liking.

To the OP, in order to advise you, you need to explain why you would want to put lead tape on your wedges. Wedges are already pretty heavy, I have only heard of players drilling holes in the back of the bounce to remove weight. On woods/metals, lead tape is placed on the toe of the club to help the face close at impact, and it placed near the heel for the opposite effect. It can also be placed strategically to move the center of gravity in an effort to get the ball to launch higher or lower, depending. Sometimes lead tape is used just to add weight. I used lead tape on my (old) putter to replace weight I lost after I cut the putter down. I used gobs of lead tape but never could get the feel back/right.

check out golf digest whats in the bag in the back of the mag, you'll often see pro's with their wedges loaded with lead tape

its all just a personal preference with feel... removing weight is known as "porting" and will lower your ball flight

I have lead tape on all of my wedges, I like my wedges to be D4 not not D3. I probably can't tell the difference to be honest, but I own a swingweight scale and I have plenty of lead tape so I set them up the way I like. If I change grips I'll check the swingweight, if I do a bit of sole grinding I'll check the swingweight, if I wear the lettering off the sole of my wedges through practice I'll check the swingweight because all that worn off metal weighed something to begin with (not much!) Basically it gives me something to do from time to time. I also do the same with irons.

In terms of changing ball flight etc, lead tape won't do it not unless you hang a whole roll of it off the back of you club somehow!

Not that I know doodly about the fine points of this, or even the not-so-fine points, but I just happened to be reading "What's in my bag" Golf Digest Sept '08, (p. 153) on Kenny Perry and noticed he had lead tape across the middle of the back of his TaylorMade RAC ZTP 54 degree wedge. If you have a newsstand somewhere nearby it should still be on display.
