what is the average distance a mid handicaper should hit a 7 iron? i know this is kind of a weird question because age, muscle, height etc plays in, but i'm just curious what people think.

for me, 160-170 yards. but, i've only been hitting that far since i bought real decent irons. the seven iron is one of my favourite clubs to hit. i used to have to be inside the 150 yard marker to have a really good chance at the green, but my comfort zone is gradually moving further away.

I'd say for a mid hdcp and average players a 7I should be around 150 yards +-10 yards.

Agreed. I think most mid- high hcps are shooting +/- 10 yards of 150 with a 7 iron.

There is no set distance that you should be averaging, the key is how close you get the ball to the hole, not what club you hit.

It is not about how far you can hit a club, you should want to hit your 7-iron as long as you possibly can while at the same time having total control of its direction. I can hit a 7 iron 220 yards but it only goes good 1 out of 10 times, thats not good. So find a tempo and speed to swing at where you can mximize your distance while still hitting with precision.

Your handicap really has nothing to do with the question. It depends on your swing mechanics and your ball striking skill. Depends how hard you swing the club as well. My normal swing is a 150-160 8 Iron, if I swing hard, it can turn into a 9 iron.

Most "beginners" will typically use their 7 iron for their 145-155 club.

I know Lange (friend on this board) was around a 16 and his 150-160 club is his 8 iron. Because he is a good ballstriker and can hit the ball properly. His mechanics were good.

Yah, if i go into hulk mode and try and absolutley destroy the ball. I usually hit it 185-190 with smooth tempo.

This is great advice, but I think what the OP is trying to get to is maybe he is just trying to compare what he is doing to what everyone else can do ...

I think he is just trying to size us all up to see who he thinks he can beat ... ~ Dot
