I have been in golf for a long time, I went on a 4 year hiatus in around 2004, so a lot has changed. Back in the day I could shoot high 70s consistently, now my swing is 85-90% of what it was, in some ways better, in others not.

I will get entirely reacquainted before I spend a lot of money.

I'm over 6 feet tall and young, I have a high clubspeed as well, easily 115 or more..so I'm not sure of what drivers will do what I need them to do for my swing.

I was using a TM R7 on loan, it was super accurate but not that long.

I bought a Cleveland HiBore XL Red S shaft because I got a good deal on it, it hits well but not amazingly, so I have a feeling I'll exchange it for something else.

Things that catch my eye:

TM R7 Superquad
TM R7 Superquad TP (Spendy!)
Nike Sumo2 5300/5900
Callaway FT-i (Never hit Callaway that good though, ever) (i-mix is awesome but spendy, is it really worth it?)

So basically I want the most distance I can get, but consistency is key, if the club can handle lots and lots of swingspeed I can make it go..

I read some things on golfreview.com saying the Superquad wasn't a long driver at all...
Thoughts?

How do you want your driver to perform? Do you want some workability?

Also, are you purchasing the driver, new? I ask only because with the price of new drivers, you can have one made, tailored to your exact specs and swing. Just food for thought.

FWIW, if I were choosing a new driver, other than my own (not a lot of people like 400cc drivers), I would go with the TM CBG Max or the old Srixon W506. I recently hit that one and it goes a pretty long way with nice trajectory.

I would like it to be a bit workable, I'd like stability and distance over workability. Do you have to go to a demo day to be fitted? Back when I left, Ping was the only person that did custom fitting usually, I know that's changed. I'll look into the CGB max.

Oh, I might buy it new, but a golf shop would have to have a good deal for me to buy it in-store, since eBay's prices are so much better.

Per TM's site they say the CGB MAX is for swingspeeds under 100 in their little chart, they indicate the R7 Superquad good for 90-115 mph+ swings, thoughts?

Hmm, I did not know that. MY SS is between 105-108MPH. It was a little faster with the CGB but that was due to the lighter shaft. It was just very easy to load and swing. The price tag was a little ridiculous, $399, new.

You don't have to go to a demo day to get fitted. Find a local fitter, near you.

I'm somewhat in the same boat as you. I took a few years off and, when I started playing again, I was really unhappy with how inconsistent I was with my driver.

I hit a few local golf shops and really looked close at the new Callaway drivers. I've played Callaway since I was a little kid so this seemed like a very good first step. In doing so I was introduced to the I-Mix system. Being somebody who loves to tweak/tune most anything this was right up my alley. They dropped the price of the I-Mix system recently too which was also a huge plus.

After hitting about 50 different FT-5 I-Mix configurations I found one that was just perfect for my game. 9.5' N FT-5 Tour head with a Diamana WB 73 XS shaft.

In playing around with the different heads/shafts I also determined what things that I could change and how that will affect ball flight. Chances are I'll pick up a few more shafts and perhaps another club head or two over the next year or so.

I, for one, LOVE the I-Mix system and the flexibility that I've gained by going with it. Of course, it doesn't hurt that I hit the new driver about 15-20 yards further, quite a bit straighter and still have the ability to work the ball at will.

Here is the best driver for you.
The one that works and feels the best...No pun intended.
Go to a local store and grab 10 drivers and hit all of them. See which one feels the best and offers what you want in a club in your price range.
Pick that one. Then come back here and tell us all about it.

I've tried the G10 numerous times and the ball kept ballooning on me even though I felt like I was hitting it on the screws. The one I used was a 10.5 degree, which no doubt had something to do with it. I'm sticking with my G5 for awhile.

In the bag:
Ping G5 Driver 9 degree, Ping G10 3-wood, Nike 3 hybrid, TaylorMade R9 Irons 4-AW, Cleveland CG15 56 and 60 degree wedges, Odyssey 2-ball blade putter

CGB Max will feel like a wet noodle if you really swing 115+. It's made for swing speeds in the high 70's to low 90's IIRC. Really you want to look at the shaft to determine which driver you need and the head secondary especially for distance.. Check out the Adams XTD pro as well with the YSQ in stiff or X.

Something is definitely fishy with that site. One thing stands out to me as it not being legit: Ping. They advertise Ping clubs WAY below MAP pricing. If anyone knows Ping as a company they do not tolerate their clubs being sold below their specified pricing. They shut down accounts left and right that do not abide by their pricing.

That tells me that this site is hocking a bunch of stolen goods, or fakes that it's getting from somewhere. There's no way a legit company would be able to keep it's accounts open otherwise.

My bias as well as most anyone elses opinion is to the clubs they own. I love my Hibore XL, you might hit a Tour Burner the best You cant go wrong with most any clubs made within the last 2 or 3 years, but you do need to swing them... or just buy blindly from our opinions and just make it work :p

    • By today’s standards that’s certainly true, but they weren’t having any trouble hitting golf balls in 2005 so I’ve equipped myself with what was among the very best equipment around that time for a very reasonable investment. If I get to the point where I feel like I’ve outgrown that stuff, I’ll reward myself with something more current. But for now I don’t need adjustable loft and lie and modern head shape, just a good quality, proven club with a clean club face. For now I’m going to concentrate on the basics. I know you can get more yardage with newer woods, but I don’t care about distance nearly as much as consistency, and you can’t buy that for any price.
