If you have an interest in research and hard data on shaft fitting, the The Modern Guide to Shaft Fitting is a wonderful resource. Originally published by Dynacraft Golf in 1992, an addendum is updated every year with measurements from a selection of the latest shafts.

"The Modern Guide to Shaft Fitting" goes in-depth on each of the various shaft parameters, plus ties it all together using the most innovative shaft fitting system ever created, the Dynamic Shaft Fitting Index. The DSFI is a mathematical formula for shaft stiffness, based on the measured frequency and torque of a shaft, and then equates it into a player's swing speed. If you want to truly learn about shafts and shaft fitting, then second edition of "The Modern Guide to Shaft Fitting" is a must read.

Hi All

I am in the middle of changing my irons and have a budget of up to 300 pounds. I have been looking at two sets of clubs and was wondering what people thought about these and weather to get these in a stiff or regular shaft. My woods are in regular shaft and I am striking these well.

Set 1 - Mizuno MP 60's 5 - PW
Set 2 - Wilson Staff FI5 forged 3 - PW

Any advise would be greatful

I was playing regular shaft irons up until last year. They played well and I didnt really have any complaints. My SS for driver is 95-105 and I hit a stiff shaft for it as well as my 3 wood. I bought new irons, Hogan Apex Edge and had them fitted. A check of all my specs said that I needed a frequency of 299 for my 5 iron and matched from there. The #4(stiff) shaft Hogans were the perfect shaft according to the numbers. I was worried about the stiff shaft but so far they feel good hitting them indoors, but the truth will come once the snow clears and the grass is there. Like any change in golf, it may take a bit to get used to them

I guess the bottom line is if it feels good in your hands, then you will probably like it on the course. Fitting from a club fitter will lead you dowwn the right path as well.

Hi All

I weigh 205, budgeting for less -- just kidding.

Generally, the answers you get may be helpful depending on how many variables are covered by those who answer, but you really should get some sound advice from someone who is preferrably fitting you for your clubs because that is really important, as well. My "indicators" on the surface (speed, distance) would all seem to point to stiff shafts being the best, but I ended up switching from stiff (which I've played forever) to regular after a solid club fitting session, and really like the difference. It depends on so many different things, including the manufacturer of the particular shaft, i.e., not all "stiff" shafts are the same for any number of reasons.

King Cobra Comp 5w (YS 5.1 Stiff)
