Just got done with a windy day round of golf and thought I would post some observations. I notice that going into the wind I had to club-up 2-3 clubs and was getting pretty good distance accuracy. However, down wind I could use the typical club selection to one down. This is a trend that I have always experienced. What do you experience?

Thanks.

That really depends. Sometimes I take a lot more club and throw the ball high into the wind so that it comes down softly. Other times I'll take the same club and power it under the wind. Downwind varies, too: I've gone as much as three clubs less to one club more (knockdown, again, to keep it out of the wind).

Yeah, it really depends on the situation. I find it hard to do what Erik was talking about (tossing a ball wayyy up into the wind and letting it land softly) because its very difficult to judge the distance. However, its surprising how little moderate winds affect a well-struck shot. As far as downwind shots go, you've just got to take your medicine and just try to put it on the green. If its near the pin, then thats gravy.

You will always find it to be true that going into the wind will have a greater effect on the ball than going with the wind. Into a 10mph headwind you may have to play two clubs more, while downwind 10mph is at best one club less.

How about shot shaping with crosswinds? Would you prefer to draw it right to left with the wind blowing right, and fight the wind. Or simply aim left and let the wind push the ball to the right?

I always try to work the ball into the wind, whether that mean a draw into the left-right wind or a fade into a right-left wind.
