I started playing golf about 3 months ago and not trying to sound full of myself but I've practiced really hard and ive become a decent golfer. My best score over nine was 51 which I know isn't that good but I'm proud of it and it is probably good enough to get me on my schools golf team. Anyways, the clubs I'm using are a really old set of wilsons that my friend say he got for 100 bucks a long time ago plus a Ping G5 6-Iron my coach gave me. I know almost NOTHING about clubs but from what I have heard the G5 irons are "game improvement" irons and I shouldn't be using them but the one I have feels pretty nice, especially compared to my wilsons. I'm looking to buy a whole new set but first I need to know what to keep in my bag. I suck with fairway woods so I was thinking about some sort of hybrid. So would something like this be good to have in my bag? Driver, 2 Hybrids, 3-9 Irons, Sand Wedge, Pitching Wedge, and Putter?
I also need a recommendation of what clubs I should buy for all of these. I know thats a lot to ask but whatever you feel like contributing is greatly appreciated. Thanks

I am going to be purchasing the Cobra S9 clones soon...I recommend that you take a look at them if you can afford them. They are an incredible club. If you can't afford them, I will let you know how the clones feel.

3-PW- Nike Pro Combo Tour Clones
3 Hybrid (2i replacement)-Ben Hogan Edge CFT

When you state "coach" above, is it the golf coach, or some other one? If it's the golf coach, and you feel that he's in a good position to help you assess clubs, then I would suggest you go that route. Or, go to a local golf shop, and swing a bunch of different clubs to get an overall feel of what's available.

Hybrids are good choices, and some companies, like Adams, make a complete hybrids set from woods to irons. Lots of online stores available as well, so now is a good time to see what's out there (good deals to be had). Used club options also exist to save you $$. As far as what to carry, you need to know what you're good at hitting, and how do the courses that you'll be playing set up for different club choices (and your budget). Enjoy the process, you'll defintiely be learning a lot.

I would recommend a new or good condition used iron set for under $300. I personally would get the following: Driver, 3w, 3 hybrid, 4 hybrid(or iron), 5-PW, GW, SW, LW, Putter.
In my bag:
Driver: Tour Burner 10.5 re*ax
3 Wood:R5 XL
Irons:FP Irons 5-GW
Hybrids:Baffler DWS 3,4 Wedges:588 RTG DSG 56º, 60ºPutter:White Hot XG #9 34"Grips: Lamkin Crossline CordsBall: Pro V1x

What you heard was wrong.

Care to elaborate on what is correct then?

In My Bag

Driver: Sasquatch 460 9.5°
3 Wood: Laser 3 Wood 15°
5 Wood: r7 19° (Stiff)Irons: S58 Irons 4-PW Orange DotWedge: Harmonized 60°Wedge: Z TP 54°Putter: Tiffany 34"Balls: Pro V1 Shoes: Adidas Tour 360 IIThe Meadows Golf Coursewww.themeadowsgc.comAge: 16

If you can afford it I would get a set fitted. You can pretty much get any clubs fitted these days and it is well worth the money.

I personally use Mizunos x23 that I bought a couple of years ago and regardless how bad I am playing I would not get rid of them.

It really comes down to personal preference, some people love hybrids and some people can not stand them. I always had a hard time hitting a 3 iron and I got a hybrid to replace it and I struggled with the hybrid as well. But I love my 18 degree hybrid that I use between the 3 wood and my irons.

If money is an issue than get a nice set of used clubs. You can usually find some by going to ebay, craigslist, or places like that on the net. If you want to buy them locally make sure you get a 30 day trade in policy so that if you buy something and get out on the golf course and find out that the clubs do not fit your game you can trade them in for a credit towards a new set.

Keep it on the short grass.

For someone that has been playing golf for 3 months and shoots over 100, I would think a "game improvement" club should certainly be a consideration.

I just started playing golf awhile ago and I recently got the Nike Oss Slingshot Irons. They're really forgiving and not that expensive. I got mine for 215 on ebay.

Bag - Warbird
Ball - Big Bertha Blue
Driver - Sumo 5900
Irons - Slingshot Oss
Putter - Rossa

I would have thought the ping G5 irons would be a good choice for you to improve your game. If money isn't an issue ping have just released the new Rapture 'super game improvement' irons which you might want to try. Best thing to do is go and try a few out. With regards as to your bag setup I would have a Driver, 1h, 3h, 4h, 5-pw, sw, putter. After a few games then decide if you want a fairway wood, another hybrid or another wedge. (I personally play cleveland hybrids, they have a couple more degrees loft than most other companies which makes the 1 and 2 hybrids easier to 'get up'.

I personally play with a Driver, 3W, 5W, 3H, 4H, 5-PW, GW, SW, putter. Am thinking of just settling for a 4W instead of carrying 2 FW and that'll let me get an extra wedge in the bag.

Driver: TaylorMade RocketBallz 10.5-deg
Woods: Cobra Bio Cell+ 3W and 5W
Hybrids: Bobby Jones Workshop Hybrid 3 (20-deg) and 5 (25-deg)
Irons: Srixon XXIO7 from 6 - PW
Wedge: Srixon XXIO7 GW and SW

Putter: Bobby Grace DCT Captiva 34"; Ball: Sirxon Soft Feel; Shoes: Footjoy

Game improvements have a low center of gravity which help you get the ball up on the air. Even a off centered hit will have less distance loss than your current set. Your old Wilsons are probably better off for a beginner since a mishit will give you feedback + make you pay for the mistake.

When you say you cannot hit fairway woods, are you referring to off of the fairway or even off of a tee? The fairway woods use more of a sweeping shot. I don't know how you hit a driver but reading what high/mid handicaps do here, even as a beginner, you hit it 270 yards right? Most beginners should not be hitting drivers (5 wood or 3 wood would be straighter). I agree you should replace the long irons with hybrids. I would suggest 3 Wood or 5 wood (as your driver), 3H, 4H, 5-PW, SW, Putter. If you really want to replace your irons (although, your irons will be better for you - after you change the grips), then Adams Golf and Nike Golf has a solid hybrid/iron combo set. Putters are a personal preference but I think lower MOI putters (blade/Anser) give feedback and will train you for distance control. Depending upon the softness or firmness of the sand, you will need a higher bounce versus a lower bounce, respectively, sand wedge. However, before you buy a set, you should really read "Search for the Perfect Club", "The Right Sticks" or "Mad Science of Golf". Lastly, you should use a low spin ball to keep yourself in the fairway.
