Today I went to the local range and had my brother record my swings. I took two with a driver, and two with a 7-iron.

(If you didn't catch on, I need tips on my swing )

Well, you seem to have a very quick tempo, your backswing seems very arm controlled, and you seem to really force the leg action on the forward swing. Your hips are way open and your back foot already well off the ground before impact. What are your basic swing problems? Slice, push, hook, top, etc.

I would work on the one-piece takeaway which will naturally slow you down a bit and as a consequence make your forward turn more natural than forced.

Shorten your backswing up. It looks as if you are way past parallel and even almost pointing downward (John Daly). Also on the range tuck a towell under your left arm, and don't let it drop during your swing. This will help you groove a more compact swing. Follow through looks pretty good.

Push/slice/both. Doesn't work out too well!

You have a very nice athletic setup and really, it is not that your swing is way off. I'll bet you can hit some good shots. A few basic changes could do wonders for you. If you could post these videos on Swing Academy you could get more specific advice and analysis.

Well I took a lesson today, and a few of the things I learned were that my hands were way behind the ball when I made contact, so it basically adds loft to the iron, which explains why I tend to hit the ball really high. I also take the club outside, so when I do my downswing, I put a ton of sidespin on it. The new mechanics feel somewhat odd, but I'm sure that's expected when I've been doing this swing all season. New videos soon, perhaps.

So you flip and come over the top. What did he have you do?

Well, simply put, there was a lot wrong:
Open shoulders
Standing too close to the ball, causing me to hit off the hozzle
Hands following behind the ball
Lots of body movement throughout the swing (e.g. head moved a lot)
Outside-in backswing

To correct the backswing and unnecessary body movement, etc, he put one of those metal L-shaped things in a position so I pretty much had to stay on plane. He also put two balls down (about an inch apart) and I had to hit the closer one without hitting the far one to prevent hitting the hozzle. We did more but I'm not quite sure how to explain it.

You're on the right track. You've got an athletic swing and good flexibility, and as soon as you can get it on plane, you'll be hitting it straighter and longer.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
