First time I've ever seen my swing on video. I took my DV camcorder out yesterday at the course. I wish I had took more footage but the pace of play was moving and I didn't have time. Anyway, this is the 13th hole, Par 3, 134 yards, 16th handicap, slightly downhill. My friends used a 9..plenty..and was short! It was a little breezy though..I hit my 8 plenty and it landed 10 feet pin high on the green.

After my own analysis of my swing I noticed:

1. Came out of it a tad quick.
2. Seemed a standing tad upright.
3. More extension
4. Tempo just a tad fast.
5. Reminded me of Justin Leonard..just a little

What do you guys think? (I'm the last one hitting in the blue shirt)

I agree with most of what you've said. You can stand a bit upright so long as you don't STAND UP RIGHT away.

I hope to get an article online today for the first in our series called "Swing Check." If you can get video of yourself from a few different angles, we can analyze it in a column. The first person we did was Jeff Smith, and his column is ready to go.

Your swing plane on the backswing looks great! Same with the plane through the ball. However, once you get your hands parallel to the ground after contact you're really ripping your arms around your body. When I feel that same sensation I tell myself "hands out." Meaning I want to feel as though, at that point in the swing, my hands/arms are as far away from my body as possible.

Also, and I understand you're hitting a short iron there, but your stance looks a tad narrow. I'd try and get your right foot perpendicular to the target. As basic as that last part sounds, it really helps.

Lastly. I think it would benefit you to get more extension at the top of your backswing. The larger the swing arc, the more time to build swing speed, which, will get your some extra distance. Here's a couple pics I found of Ernie Els, check out the top of his swing compared to yours...

Looking at the other video you posted. You've got the ball WAY too far back in your stance. Particularly on that 7 iron tee shot. Ideally one would like the ball two inches insde the left foot, you've got it 2 inches from the inside the right. I'd imagine you that when you do take divots, that they are far in front of where you had the ball in your stance?

I play a lot of my clubs near the center of my stance. The 5-iron is about two inches forward of center. Not everyone has the same ball position, and I'd be leery about changing that. I'd rather he work on things like those "short arms" at impact.

    • I speak for myself. If I inventory my swing thoughts, swing tempo, optimum muscle tension and rehearse a swing before I take my address, then I pull the trigger reasonably quickly with usually acceptable results. Like a proper program download before deploying it. If I don't bother to by forgetting or just not caring, I am inclined to look for my cues while hovering over the ball after taking the address, while tension builds up and then I fire with a half ass program that is still buffering. I guess that's no better than rolling a dice. In other words, a good pre-shot routine does wonders. I am not advising folks to take 13 practice swings while the flowers wilt waiting for something to happen, but one or maybe two are reasonable and good for you. I am certain hitting half ass shitty shots and making double bogey takes longer than making a par.  My desire this year is to just that as I have not developed a habit taking a practice swing and as a result have tendency to freeze over the ball after address, that is counter productive for both time and result. I think that is what @saevel25 is talking about in the OP.

    • I think there's a difference between taking time over the ball and taking time to play a shot, at least IMO. One thing I've noticed in a few guys I play with who take a long time over the ball to pull the trigger, is that their backswing is really fast and I think it makes it harder to have a smooth rhythmic down swing. It's almost like they take so long to swing that when they do they speed to catch up. Doesn't lead to good golf IMO.

    • As long as it's from a reputable seller it should be just fine. Just make sure the picture of the weight looks the right shaped weight for that specific driver head. You can even weigh it yourself when you get it if you want to be extra sure. Personally I don't consider $15 for something that can greatly change your impact and delivery characteristics to be "not cheap" but that's just my opinion. Especially since you know it's bringing it closer to what you were fit into and you're already saving a bunch of money by going the used/prior model year route too.
