I finally figured it out.

For those who has been following my two posts…. Here is an update as to what has transpired.

Just to summarize, I was having issues driving the ball with my TM Burner 10 Regular. Over and over, I couldn’t figure out where I’m doing wrong? I changed my swing, I changed my grip, I changed where I would tee the ball, essentially, I did everything I can before switching to another driver. This led me to move to a Callaway FTi 10 Regular.

I know I know that it’s the Indian and not the arrow (or some saying like that). For a good part, it’s true. For the second part, it’s the driver (at least this is what I will partly believe).

I wanted to post this for those who are out there pretty much in the same boat. I will tell you one thing, the driver, the basics of swing/grip/stance/etc. and one specific video really shaped and corrected this for me. I know many people stated it’s the swing/grip/stance/etc. but really not much detail was given or people even suggested watching videos (lots of it) and it will come to you. Really they were all great advices but nothing that can pinpoint specifically what to watch or what to do.

So here is what I suggest which I can’t guarantee it will work but it will be here on the forum for anyone that can find some beneficial aspect to this post.

1.Get your grip right. Meaning….make sure it’s a “strong” grip. It’s as simple as that. Google “strong” grip if you have too or have someone show you, the point is this has to be done to begin with…

2.Understand your swing. It’s hard to explain this but google swing planes, etc. You’ll see what I mean. You should be swinging on the same plane.

3.Understand how to tee up the ball. Here is a biggie for me. This is where I went wrong. One specific video (finding the link for you), actually showed me what I was doing wrong.

Everyone says that the ball should be halfway up the driver. That’s true! However, where you place it on the ground matters (near your toe, inside of your foot, etc.). I’m sorry to say but tee’ng halfway up the driver face may be correct but if you do not match it to where you tee off on the ground, it will not make any difference.

So, where do you go from here. Essentially, you want to put the driver on the ground. Tee up the ball where half of it is above the top of your driver.

Now align your shoulders parallel to the ball towards your target. Place your left foot aligned with the ball. Anywhere for the time being (toe, inside foot, etc.)

Place the driver in front of you (between your legs) as if you tee’d a ball directly in front of you (imagine it). Now, move the club as if you are now on your upswing (forward). It should align right where the ball is tee’d by your foot.

This is where you now need to adjust…either the tee and/or your left foot. The rule of thumb (I guess is), the further forward you put the ball (left from your left foot), the higher the tee you go because your upswing is going to be higher on the ground, however, it shouldn’t really go past your left foot. Lower the tee, if you are moving in the middle of your stand more but obviously you want to catch the ball on your upswing.

Now when you swing, I don’t look at the ball (or I keep one eye on the ball), I swing as if there is an imaginary ball in front of me. I take a full swing so that as I try to hit the imaginary ball in front of me (directly in the middle of my stance), as my club is following it’s swing plane, it’s going to catch the “aligned” tee’d ball on my upswing.

This by concentrating on the imaginary ball, this prevent me from turning my right shoulder towards the ball.

That is it.

I know that these instructions are really wacky but I hit 15 fairways with this technique, about two holes a foot or 2 in the rough and I think 1 that just went somewhere in the rough because I got too excited and didn’t align myself towards the fairway. I think I was thinking to compensate for the slice when it went straight as an arrow.

Anyway, hope this helps someone.

If this is confusing, please let me know and I will try to walk you through it. I know that this may not work for everyone or this is some secret but I think this technique is general enough to at work for most people because it’s the little things you don’t think about…

I like to look at the ball, but follow through to an imaginary ball two inches in front of my real ball on the target line. It helps me hit straight drives, irons, and putts.

Its a nice way to think of hitting straight drives. I have been slicing a lot so i might try this out

I;ve made adjustments that work for a round or two and then stop working because in reality I changed something ELSE that I did not realize and then stopped doing that thing. So, I will bookmark this thread and if after 5 more rounds you are still hitting them straight I will re-read it and try out your technique. Thanks for sharing!

in my case my drives always slice due to the opening of my left shoulder before impact. Yeah i think the tour avg is like 30 deg open on the shoulder but mine would open upto an extreme degree... this of course cause my club face to open also...

so to fix this i tried many things but old habits die hard...
but anyhow i was able to get over it thru re lining my swing path to an inside out swing and practicing to speed up my releaseon my down swing...
its not consistent but it has been working for me... yeah slices can be frustrating.... but be pesistent!

life is too short to play bad golf....

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
