Putting impact tape on my clubface, it shows that I am hitting my driver in the center, but up near the top of the clubface. I've tried a couple things. Moving farther from the ball, moving it up near my left foot, and right now it is at the shop being reshafted (extra 1.5"). Oh, I also tried a slightly lower tee.

What else can I do to start hitting the ball lower on the clubface? This is costing me like 20 yards or more of distance.

So you're missing the center of the face and ADDING 1.5" to the shaft? I realize that club fitting takes into account the physical characteristics of the golfer. But it should also take into account ball striking ability. Especially with the driver, if you are missing the center of the face you should try a shorter shaft. The distance of your average drives, not your best of 5 or 10, will actually go up with a shorter shaft IF you start hitting the center of the face. I added about 10-15 yards to my

average drive by going to a 44" shaft. Or you could go with a stiffer lower launch shaft or a lower loft head. Not that long ago this was the prefered method of hitting a driver. This was what they called the "gear effect" of hitting the top of the face where the loft was higher than the stated loft on the club. Good luck!

I hit it straight 9/10 times. Just far shorter than it should be for my swing speed. I had the driver cut short originally, because I had played for less than a year and wanted accuracy. Now that I hit the ball fairly accurately, I want a bit more distance. One way to do that is a longer shaft.

I'm just looking for swing changes. Ball position, grip, things like that.

I had a similar issue this year with the hozzle of the driver face. No matter how far I got away from the ball I could still over reach and hit the heal of the club.

Try tilting your shoulders more at address. Take your normal address position then tilt your spine so that your front shoulder is an inch higher.
This should give you more launch angle and help you catch it on the upswing a little more. Play around with it a little. You should find your shoulder angle will be similar to your launch angle.

Went to the range today with a strip of impact tape for my driver (plus 2.5", it is already done :)). What seemed to work best was a slow relaxed swing, good weight shift, and a slightly flatter swing plane. It seems like I was swinging my driver with a swing plane similar to my irons, really steep (I used to have major dropping problems, as well as a really low swing plane). I am now hitting it more in the center, but since I am now really swinging hard at all, it isn't going as far as it could.

Does that sound about what is good?

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
