I have been playing pretty good golf lately but I still have a major problem with my wedges, I simply don't understand what to do with them. In the past I hit them really accurately with a vary over the top swing and I had divots that pointed 30-45 degrees to the right of the target but the ball usually went where I was aiming but without spin.

I have tried for months now to get the divots pointing at the target or a little right of it but if I manage to straighten out the swing plane I always lose the ball right, even with a square clubface. I read a little of the short game bible recently and it says the wedge swing is completely different than any other swing in golf? He mentions that all the power moves should be absent and there shouldn't be any of what many people call *kinetic linking* everything in sync with everything else.

An older guy I play with told me that I should line up 45 degrees left of the target so that I didn't block? I don't know anymore, there is to much conflicting advice when it comes to golf. What should I do?

That doesn't sound bad if you normally play a right to left draw.

I'm not sure how you wouldn't be spinning the ball at all if you were taking divots unless you were really scooping it.

Actually I would say a short wedge shot is a microcosm of all of the other swings in golf. You can learn the vast majority of a golf swing from a chip.

I think with a full sand wedge all of your basic power moves should be present, just to a much lesser degree. My hips are quieter. My shoulder turn is more gradual. Its all there it is just a lot more relaxed.

Don't ever do that.

The reason those old men tell you to do such things is because they spent their entire lives hitting it dead right or dead left and so rather than fix the problem they just aim accordingly. Don't be that guy.

I would set up with my feet together, knees slightly bent, weight forward with an open stance placed the ball back of your stance and have the club face facing the target. This set up make you hit consistent shots and your learn the distance with how far you take the club back and accelerate through the ball with each shot.

When i play a wedge I set up with an open stance and the ball in the very middle of my stance. I try to hit down on the back of the ball which helps with spin. Doing this i hit my SW 70 yards

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
