I am a 25 HDCP.

What do you recommend for higher handicappers?

Stick with one type of chip and get really good at it or try different chips and styles.

I have two types of chips in my skill set at the moment. Well actually 3 but I rely heavily on one. I like to put my grip way in front and play the ball back in my stance. Then make a normal swing at it with the really cocked club and fire it up there. Hey it works and works well I get compliments on that shot, but it does seem a bit weird and unorthodoxed.

I can also play a chip where I wrap the club around the body more than going back and up like I do on my normal swing.

Then of course there is just my normal swing with the lob and sand wedge, which is my least accurate.

Anyway thoughts?

This has been my go to short game shot for a couple of years. It's almost fail safe if you continue to accelarate through the ball. It's not the best in super wet conditions though and that is where I often putt with my hybrid when I can.

JMHO, I'd use this shot as much as possible. I use this shot with 5 different wedges and can cover anything from 15-60 yards with a "7:30" swing. I still have a little problem with the theory that mid/high handicappers shouldn't carry a 60 or 64 degree wedge. That makes no sense to me. They are just another club. But I agree that a lot of damage is done with these clubs. I've just seen them fail for people because of the types of shots they try to play with them (delicate pick shots, flop shots, etc). Plus in the past lob wedges didn't have as much bounce as is often available these days. Few people can hit a 2* bounce wedge. Keep it simple (like your go to shot) and you can varry your distances with different wedges. The low handicapper can play 4 different shots with 1 wedge. It's just easier for me to play 1 shot with 4 different wedges....or in my case 5..haha Good Luck!

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
