I went and played 18 holes this past Saturday in 40 degree weather. I shot a 7 over for 18 holes. I was stoked. But it came about in a wierd way...
  • I was bombing my driver by my standards, avg. about 280 per drive. But the problem is that EVERY SINGLE DRIVE went right, way right.
  • My normally reliable irons ALL went left.
  • But my short game and putter where i normally lose all my strokes, were dead on. I never had more than a 2 putt on any hole. And I put 90% of my wedge shots within 10ft.

So all my drivers went right. I had to aim right with my irons since they were going left and my short game saved the round.

It was my worst round all year because there were some strange things going on with my swing but it turned out to be my best round of the year by shooting a 79.

OK, I'll feed off the title here....

Best - 78
Worst - 103

Now back to your post........
It seems that I can do the same thing you describe; I have a lousy day striking the ball, and i score well, and then there are days that I am ecstatic about the way I am striking it, and just cannot score!

I'll tell you though, I am WAY happier with a higher score where I know I hit the ball well, than the days the crappy shots come out great.....

My best round of the year was a 75, although that was a par 69 course. On par 72, my best was 76.
My worst round of the year was a 99 (I made about a 25 foot big breaking putt on 18 to secure that beauty).

Most of the time the difference between my best rounds and worst rounds comes down to short game (chipping and putting, since I don't hit a lot of greens), although for me driving the ball long and straight almost always lead to better scores as well.

Best 59
Worst.... doesn't matter. After a 59 all is good.

My swing thoughts:

- Negative thinking hurts more than negative swinging.
- I let my swing balance me.
- Full extension back and through to the target. - I swing under not around my body. - My club must not twist in my swing. - Keep a soft left knee

Had one of my best rounds the past weekend ball striking and driving wise, but i could not chip or putt to save my life. I made my first 300 yard drive, actually 302. and my irons were pretty much dead on straight, but just a tad shorter than usual. I ended up scoring a 89. Which isn't bad by my standards, but i could have shot lower if i could just putt.

    • Yep, I almost flagged an 8 iron just exaggerating my right elbow backswing stuff 🤣 I am sure I might get some stalling. Maybe the sequence is a bit out of sync. I also tend to flip more when I overswing. Doing really good. It’s rejuvenated me a bit. I’m going to start weight lifting soon.
    • However 2.1b says re GP scores 2.1b ii) General Play. When an organized competition is not being contested, a score is not generally acceptable for handicap purposes if the player: * Breaches the Rules of Golf, and the correct penalty is not applied under the Rules of Golf, or * Deliberately ignores a Rule of Golf. Where a player follows the provisions set down in a Model Local Rule, even when the Committee in charge of the course has not adopted that Model Local Rule, the score may still be acceptable for handicap purposes.
    • CONGU – who control handicapping in Great Britain and Ireland – affirmed the Local Rule could not be used in any qualifying competitions or general play scores. That’s any event where handicap marks could be affected.
    • I think you are spot on.  Seems like every survey I read about playing golf in the US says that the biggest issue here is pace of play. Anything that can help pace of play feels like a good idea.
    • Just checking.  Are you healthy again? I seem to remember you going through some injury issues. Are all of those behind you now? Or are you still doing PT?
