I remember reading an article saying that a tour player was DQ'd for using a titliest Pro V1 prototype ball by mistake that wasn't approved by the USGA yet (there is a 99% chance that it would have passed ). If you get DQ'd for using protoype equipment why is it ok that most of the tour players have prototype equipment, check out this link .

My best guess is that even though it is prototype equipment, the design, and the individual club, has been approved. It may not be available to the public, but it is on the approved list so it can be used.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

Exactly. The OP didn't read the article closely enough. His specific markings weren't on the approved list. Everyone else who doesn't get DQed, their equipment is. Driver heads, balls, etc.

Yeah I heard about this. He seemed pretty upbeat about it, saying how he will learn not to do it again etc. Pretty expensive learning curve though, and it would be hard not to be shattered by this small error
