I had a weird thing happen today. I was chipping up to the green from about 70 yards, had to get it under a tree limb, so I grab my 4i and hit a little punch shot and the head of my iron goes flying! I hadn't actually used that club on a full shot all round, but had hit two similar punches. The graphite shaft broke off under the ferrule, the fibers were twisted and torn. How does this happen on such a low power shot?

I'm really bummed because I can't just go get a replacement shaft, since they are 15 yr old OEM shafts. They are taper tip, too, so I can't even tip trim an aftermarket shaft to try to match it up without reaming out to .370".

I guess I should be thankful that it was on a chip rather than a full shot, I had a different 4i head let go once on a tee shot and the head went 70 yards. I should probably check the rest of my irons.

You can always just buy a hybrid of comparable loft to replace the broken 4 iron.

what kind of iron and shaft was it?

"Irons: RAM Laser FX Forged 4-SW w/ Eximer graphite" BTW, to the OP - I just retired my Laser FX irons this summer, they served me well for 17 years, but the wedge had no grooves left!

pick up a loose 4iron used for cheap. that is the most cost effective way to replace the club. i'd also suggest a 4iron hybrid or something to just replace that club, rather than repair it.

Speaking of this, what is the best way to re-groove or sharpen the grooves on wedges if possible? My irons are a few years old, and am wondering whether it is worth working them over...

Is that a chip?

Carnac the Magnificent says:

HAHA

How'd you figure that out?

Yup! That'd be the way to go.

I never get the terminology right, maybe it was more like a short punch shot. I ended up taking a mulligan after the club broke and used my 7w instead, put it 6 ft from the hole. Did I mention that I was hitting across the road from the hole?

Luckily I have a 27 deg. hybrid waiting to get shafted up, I guess now I have a reason to do it.

I am especially impressed now. It sucks to break a shaft, but under those circumstances....I'm impressed!

Ha... when I was a kid I went to the driving range with my dad the night before a work golf tournament and lost the head to his driver... it just flew off. My brother made fun of me all my life.... until this year he did the same to his driver, and then a couple weeks after to his 3 iron. Jokes on him now!

I saw a young teenage guy at the driving range break two fairly new Taylor Made woods with consecutive shots! They looked like pretty decent clubs R460s or something...he seemed terrified about the prospect of telling his Dad!

haha... fortunately my dad doesn't really have expensive taste when it comes to golf. But I didn't know how to bring it up at all so I just put the shaft back into the golf bag.

...shoulda seen his reaction when he looked for his driver and pulled out a shaft with no head. In retrospect it's actually really funny.
