I currently have an 9.5* Adams driver with a regular flex shaft. I originally had the stiff shaft, but I tended to get a low, fading ball flight. When the head snapped off and I sent the club to Adams, I asked for the regular flex.

Problem is, the club feels totally uncontrollable now. Even though the rest of my clubs are regular flex (and work great for me) this thing feels like swinging a giant noodle.

I'm thinking of getting the club reshafted with a stiff shaft that is preferably 2-3+ inches shorter than the stock shaft. I'm not sure if shafts even come in those lengths. I also would like to get a mid-high launch despite the stiffness.

Can you guys recommend some shafts that meet these requirements? What length would you recommend? I don't care about distance, I just want a "can't miss" club length. I'm comfortable with a 3 hybrid club length, which is 40.5", but I'm guessing that's a little too short for the driver.

Related question: is it legal to add weight to a driver head after shortening the shaft?

I would not reccomend taking that much off of the shaft cause it might mess with the flex(someone correct me if im wrong). Maybe take two or three inches off to make it a 43 or 44. Here are some good shaft links. this one is for the V2 proforce shafts- http://www.ustgolfshaft.com/shaft_mo...uct.aspx?id=77 this has a mid ball flight. This one has a high ball flight but I think its pretty pricey- http://www.mitsubishirayongolf.com/p...=dia_w〈=en .
Good luck

Now I don't know whether to try and cut the shaft or just buy a new one. Gripping down isn't going to solve the issue of the club feeling like a noodle. I guess I could try cutting and see what happens. Would 2-3 inches turn the shaft into an x-stiff?

Here's another question. Assuming I go for a new shaft, how should I decide on the torque rating? I have trouble closing the club face fully, and while I recognize that's a swing flaw, would that still enter into the consideration?

even taking 1 inch off of the shaft will increase the stiffness greatly, let alone 2-3 inches.

i think the general rule is 1 inch increases the flex from reg to stiff.

Sorry, but are ya'll getting those numbers from an actual cut down or from experience. Yes cutting a shaft will change the flex, but going from regular to stiff, I call BS. Those are numbers that have gone through the internet for years with no substantial proof. Each shaft has it's own charateristics that will be affected. If the cut down is from the tip end, that can affect flex more than from the butt end. Some shafts(particulary steel) use trimming at the tip to change flex. I had an Aldila NV 85 Stiff that I cut down(butt end) to 43.5" from 44.5", and it was far from X-stiff afterward. I seriously doubt that anyone would have been able to notice a change in the flex, unless Superman is in their family tree. Armonster, If you are going to reshaft anyway, go ahead and cut the current shaft down and see how you like it. If you don't, then go back to a longer shaft. No matter what the nay-sayers spout, sometimes trying something new/different will help. There are alot of us that grew up playing 43" steel shafted drivers that have gone back to a shorter shaft and love it.

First things first. Driver shafts, stock off the shelf, are too damn long! Period. Check my driver specs.

My best advice is to go to a qualified club fitter and make it really clear with them what you want to do with your driver. The reason for that is, they will probably charge the same for the shaft and installation as anybody. Plus they can put you in the right flex, flex profile, shaft weight and swing weight (which will be radically changed with anything more than a 1" cut). You might pay a little more for re-swingweighting and the shaft fitting process but I'm guessing no more than $50 extra. And you will have a custom fit club...not just a club with a new shaft that is some sort of swing weight and some arbitrary flex....I've had the later and I fought that thing forever before getting fitted.

Thanks for the advice. Now I feel a little more comfortable getting a shorter shaft. As long as a 43" shaft will get me more distance than my 3 hybrid (which goes about 240) then I should be good to go. I'll update this thread when I get some results.
