  1. 1. What do you do when your driver fails you?

    • Switch to a club you are hitting well, like a hybrid or 3-wood.

    • Damn the torpedos, keep trying and hope it straightens out.

You go a couple of holes and realize for whatever reason your driver is not working at all - you are losing balls OB, muffing shots, etc.

I normally switch to my hybrid. Normally if my driver is off the 3-wood tends to follow suit.

I would say fix the driver on the range, not the course.

Also, if you hit a bucket of balls before you play you will have a good idea of what your driver is going to do to you. Likely if your missing it right, you will be missing right all day, so aim left a little, untill you have some time on range to fix it.

I wouldn't go as far down as an iron off the tee, though. I would rather be in the rough 300 yards out than the fairway at 200 yards, generally speaking.

I hit a 4H barely teed up. I'd like to get to the point where I have a back-up easy driver swing that always goes straight....if that's even possible.

In those cases I usually switch to the 3W or 2H. If even that's not working I would switch to my 5H. I seldom have driver issues, but I went through that at the first of this year and had to hit a lot of 3W. Fortunately my short game was great so I was not really scoring any worse.

If my driver is off, my 3W is usually on. I can slice my driver on 3 straight holes, then pipe my 3W for the rest of the round.

I'd be inclined to go with 3 iron.

I was playing with a guy today who just couldn't hit his driver for toffee. He had a strong swing and when he hit it well it was long and good...but that was about 10% of the time. He was just blocking it OB with pretty much every shot and wouldn't give up!

If I hit a few drives out of bounds my score will not matter to me anymore, so I will try to make any adjustments on the course, that's just me. I usually hook the ball and will start to check my swing mechanics and will start with the following adjustments:

1) check my grip
2) swing path on my backswing
3) full back swing
4) my tempo
5) try punch drivers
6) start taking the club more outside to compensate for the hook
7) open the club face more
8) tee from the left and aim right to anticipate the hook
9) arm distance from my body

I usually can figure out the problem within a hole or two, I will usually start with a draw and will quickly make the necessary adjustment before I get into too much trouble. I like the challenge of trying to make the adjustment on the course, so I will always try to correct the driver swing.

I still hit my driver on the holes that are clearly driver holes, I just gamble a little less. So holes where Can hit the driver, or can hit a hybrid and still get there in 2, i use the 2nd option.

Am I the only one who keeps at the driver? Usually, if my driver isn't working, neither is any of my other swings. The extra forgiveness of my 2H doesn't really help, I'll just end up shorter, out of bounds. I like to do what I can to fix my swing before I hit again and usually it evens itself out.

I don't get into long bad streaks with the driver. I may hit poorly one or 2 holes, but I can always analyze it and get if fixed. There are a few things that I tend to do as a round goes on, and about midway I'll start trying to swing too hard, hit from the top, and aim too far right. 95% of my bad drives are caused by one of these 3 things. Since I know my tendencies, I usually know exactly what I did, and with a few practice swings, I can get it back on track again.

I do use my 3W and 4W regularly, but just on holes when it's right club choice, not as a band aid for a swing fault.

If I'm swinging poorly with my driver, I usually will be doing the same thing only a good bit shorter with my 3w. And as many people've said already, I usually know what my swing flaw is that's causing the problem so either I aim to compensate or I step back, take a minute to try and recenter my swing, and then damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!

damn the torpedos baby... usually it works itself out... hopefully not too late in the round

I always stick with my driver, if I'm slice/pushing everything I will compensate with aim/stance/grip. I don't usually have a problem with pull/hooking although the last round I played I was pulling everything left. I never did figure it out.
Oh well, damn the torpedos. The driver is the most fun to hit of all the clubs in my bag.

When my driver fails, I used to leave it in the bag and go to my 3 iron. Now I try to work it out on the course. I've gotten better at working it out on the course.

    • I have been debating getting a launch monitor of some sort, if only so I can re-figure my shot zones (I haven't actually mapped them in years) and also to practice distance wedges at home.  I have to see if this works with either my current setup, or what my setup would be if I move it to the garage.
    • Day 48, June 23.  After work today, I took 25 minutes in my practice room;  6-iron, same everything as yesterday except the time and count.
    • Well, this is interesting.  I think we discovered a few months ago that I haven't been following professional golf in a while (my confusion about Scotty's footwork confirmed that), so at least as I aim to follow a bit more I'll get something new to learn with all of you.  My very quick read of Erik's summary makes me think this new Challenger series fits somewhere between Korn Ferry and the Championship (not Champions, but I know I'm going to make that mistake a few times if I'm not careful!).   My recollection is that there were already second-tier events among the PGA Tour;  the Bob Hope didn't have the same quality of field as the event at Riviera (whose current name I forget, although now that I say that, I realize the Palm Springs event hasn't been called the Bob Hope in a few years either).   With the absence of the FedEx (if I'm reading that correctly), does that mean no more FedEx Cup at all? Hopefully I'll have time later in 2026 to sit down and see what we're in for in 2027, where one of my goals already is to follow more professional golf.
    • The highlights as I see them: Championship and Challenger Series The creation of the PGA Tour and the PGB Tour, in the words of Joel Dahmen a few years ago. They're calling them the Championship Series (23-24 events) and the Challenger Series (20+ events). Both run February to August. They feel this will achieve three things: increasing the consistency and quality of fields across the season creating a clear system for players to earn and retain status and delivering a more structured and competitive experience for fans and partners—all in an effort to strengthen meritocracy. Championship Series Structure and Eligibility The 23-24 events includes the Players, majors, season-ending events, and the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup. These will be 72-hole events with a 36-hole cut to the top 65 and ties and purses of $20M+. 120 players without an alternate list. 90 players (roughly) from the previous year and 20 players promoted from the Challenger Series. Full eligibility will be finalized later this year. Sites (cities) to be finalized soon, but 10 of the 15 courses have already been determined. Postseason: includes retention and relegation and concludes with match play. The Tour Championship will also be played across a rotation of prestigious courses. Challenger Series Structure and Eligibility 20+ events. Running concurrently. Will feature players fighting their way back to the Championship Series or players graduating and on the upswing from the Korn Ferry Tour. Many of these events will be current PGA Tour courses. About 7 of the Challenger Series events will be during off weeks for the Championship Series with elevated purses and visibility. Purses of at least $4M, with cuts similar to the Champ series. 144 player fields. Competitive Fields for Both Series Players will be eligible for only one series at a time: Championship Series Players are not eligible for Challenger Series events. Championship Series members will have a known schedule with all events having the same eligibility. Players and Majors will have their own eligibility criteria. Championship Series players don't have to play all events. This begs the question about, say, the Canadian Open, and other "home-town" events that players might want to play, even if they're Challenger Series events. Will releases be granted? Promotion and Relegation At least 90 players will be retained in the Championship Series, and 20 players will be promoted from the Challenger Series each year. Battlefield promotion for two-time winners from the Challenger Series. Players relegated from the Championship Series will have a "last chance" opportunity to retain status, or will go to the Challenger Series. Criteria will be finalized before the start of the 2027 season. Points System New points system (not FedExCup points). Separate points systems for the Championship and Challenger Series. Elevated points in the Challenger Series for off-weeks on the Championship Series. More details tk. Elevated International Events in the Fall The fall schedule will include a limited series of elevated international events with top players from the Championship Series, with the intent to deliver in partnership with the DP World Tour as part of the Strategic Alliance. Last Chance Series The Tour will develop a “last chance” series of 4-6 events in the fall, with a limited number of spots on the Championship Series available for top finishers. Eligibility will include players relegated from the Championship Series, Challenger Series players, and other categories to be determined. Q-School continues, as do the Korn Ferry Tour and PGA Tour Latinoamerica. Also, Brian Rolapp is the new commissioner as of January 1, 2027.
