My wife asked me what she could get me for Christmas tonight. I immediately said I would like a new pair of golf shoes. I have planar fasciitis in both feet and have to wear shoes with "large" arch support. I walk the course 95% of the time and with my old shoes, I would have a hard time walking the next day. Recently I have been wearing regular athletic walking shoes, but I tend to slide too much in my downswing. Are there any golf shoes with very good arch support and heel cushion? I prefer a traditional style golf shoe, but anything would be better than what I have now. I do like some of the half traditional/half athletic styles(for lack of a better term). I have tried on a few recently at DSG that felt good in the store, but think they might suck after a few rounds. My wife knows that you get what you pay for, so she would rather give me a pair that will last (both durable and support) for more money.

A couple months ago I bought a new pair of Ecco golf shoes and find them to be the most comfortable golf shoes I've ever had. Most people who have Ecco shoes (golf or otherwise) will tell you they are great shoes. I have high arches so I also like good arch support and these are much better than other golf shoes I've had for that. I also know that Bite makes shoes for people with foot problems that have built in orthotics. Of course, another good option is purchase whatever shoes you like best and buy good orthotics for them.

I have plantar fasciitis as well, but maybe not as bad... whenever I feel it starting, I start doing exercises to stretch the tendon, and it stays away. First time I got it it was so bad I couldn't even step down on my foot at all. I didn't know what it was so I just stayed off the foot and it just got worse and worse, until I was diagnosed and started stretching it. I also have fairly low arches, so don't need shoes with a high arch. I love my FJ countours... and my older FJ's though... and as the above poster mentioned, I have heard good things about Ecco shoes. I would think you could put an insert in many of the shoes to help out if necessary.

You need to get custom made orthotics from a podiatrist first then try shoes on. You will not regret the decision. For the most part the orthotic will mean you need a 1/2 size larger.

I wear Superfeet inserts in my golf shoes and they give me better arch support. They run about $20-$30 on line.

I also wear the Superfeet inserts and can say they make my Dry-Joys feel great! I'll never go back to wearing any golf shoe without these inserts.

Ecco was one of the brands I was going to check out. I use orthotics in my work shoes due to walking on concrete all day. I also do the stretching excercises and roll a frozen water bottle under my arch and heel. I am definately going to look into the Superfeet inserts. I had a good pair of Dr.Schols inserts that I used before the orthotics. My podiatrist actually recommends using an insert/insole with a large arch support that I can change out everyother month instead of the expensive orthotics.

Ditto on the plantar fasciitis....same here. The frozen water bottle trick is golden, too.

My podiatrist fitted me with a "wedge" that cradles my heel and build up beneath my arch and ends before reaching the balls of my feet. It is a very firm, hard actually, wedge. This unyielding arch support felt weird for about ten minutes of walking....but then it made the pain almost go away. The Doc said to swap them out and wear in every pair of shoes I put on....even my golf shoes....so make sure you try your orthotics in the shoes when you are trying them on. I've had really good luck with Nikes since. If I work long shifts and am on my feet a good bit.....or walk 18...I may feel some soreness at that time....but later on when I try to sleep....OUCH!!! I suspect you know about the night pains....thus the frozen bottle trick. Prior to seeing a podiatrist I went through numerous off the rack inserts....essentially wasting my $$$$. Good luck in your search. The Ecco brand keeps getting high recomendations from the folks I've seen wearing them. One fella that I golf with once a month or so wears them....he swears by them...funny thing is that he is very tight...reluctant to spend money on anything, however he had no problem dropping $200 on those shoes. He said if I ever tried a pair that I would understand.

How does echo compare to Nike with sizing? I don't have a dealer nearby, and you can get them on ebay new for 1/2 price.

If you can still get a hold of Bite shoes...I have similar feet problems and have found the Biofit shoes to be very nice. Extra wide toe box, nice arch support and removable inserts that you can use or they have an extra thin insert if you have your own custom orthotics. I have had great success with them and can walk 18 with no problem.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
