Hey there, first time posting a thread so go easy on me :)
I have only been playing around a year and a half now, and I am around a 21 handicap. I have been using Nike Ignite irons that I have had since I began to play and I feel they are too heavy for my liking. My pro suggested I take a look at MP-57 for the great feedback they provide. I at the moment am leaning towards the 57's, but I was hoping that I could get some advice here on what people feel is good to use.

Thanks for any and all advice!

LOL...I can imagine the excitement level! A couple questions.... Are you limited to buying from what HE has in stock? if so, what does he sell? Are you looking for accuracy? feel? workability?

No I am not, I am most likely going to be heading over to Golfsmith to hit in their demo areas, or go over to the driving range and test out a bunch of different clubs, or maybe both. So I can look at any club out on the market, my pro suggested that the 57's would be a good club for me to grow into and hopefully use the great feedback from the club to improve my ball striking.

And I am absolutely looking for accuracy above all, but having a nice feel is always good, afterall my current irons feel so heavy its almost frustrating swinging them.

I agree with him....those are tremendous irons...

Again, you'd be hard pressed to find a more suitable set of irons...

Okay....with this being the case you need to have someone measure the static weight of your current clubs....and make sure that with your next set, they use lighter shafts....

Head weights are pretty much all the same...but shafts can come from about 50 to 140 gms each Good luck!

I feel my decision has been made for me but it seems worth checking out other models as well.

Not to contradict what your pro suggested, but I'm not sure the Mizuno MP-57 is the best choice for you. They are great irons, but as a 21 handicap you may want something more forgiving than them. Going from the Ignite irons to MP-57 is a big change. Try out as many different models as you can and don't let the pro talk you into purchasing model that you just don't like as well. And BTW, Mizuno irons tend to have heavy heads (you mention you think your Ignites are too heavy for you). A lot of times Mizuno irons come with lighter shafts to counter the heavy weights of heads. If they are available, try the Mizuno MX-200 and MP-52 models as well (unless money is an issue since the 52's are pretty expensive).

I think the MP 57's might punish you a little more that is necessary as you try to improve your game. Golf is suposed to be fun at least some of the time. If you are looking for a little more forgiveness in a forged iron try the MP 52's. I have played Mizuno irons for years and recently switched to them with no regrets. What ever you get though, make sure that someone that knows what they are doing fits them to you. The proper fit is most no matter which club you end up buying.

With regard to a fitter, I had planned on just stopping over by Golfsmith, but there is also an actual fitter nearby however I was afraid of how much he charges to fit clubs and things like that, I have heard it can cost upwards of $200 a person, which is a tad steep for me.

I would have to disagree with this. I was about the OPs hndcp this time last year and in February I got my 67s(which are harder to hit than the 57s). They were my 2nd set of irons and my first was the 06 Big Berthas(what shovels they were

). With the switch in irons I dropped my hndcp by 10 strokes at least(i say at least because I did not keep an actauly hndcp last year but i know i was shooting 92-93 with a low of 89). These irons turned my best score from a 89 to a 78 and the 78 was from two tees further back than the 89. I realize that i am probably in the minority here but I think that a 20 handicaper with a decent swing should play blades or at least a club that punishes for mishits and improve their swing. This is just my humble opinion. Good luck

Hmm that also makes some sense as well... I do feel I could improve my game with the 57's, and I am wondering whether the wonderful people on these forums feel it is worth seeing an actual fitter or just going to golfsmith and getting my swing speed and measurements taken...

I'm in a similar boat as you, 201-pb. I've been playing with the same set of mid-size cavity backs for the past 12 years, from when I could barely break 100 all the way down to my current handicap. I'm looking at used irons on eBay for my next set.

It's never a bad idea to see an actual fitter. I understand the cost involved can be a detterant. At most Golfsmith stores they have GolfTEC onsite and they do professional fittings and lessons. Worst came scenario, most retail stores will do a static fitting when trying clubs. This involves you hitting clubs off strike board (for lie angle), measuring your swing speed (for shaft flex) and measure for club length. Some will even check for grip size at this type of fitting. I highly recommend the more in depth fitting, but at least this is something. I think at some of these stores the more complete fitting is only about $40-50, though to begin with. I had a friend who went to GolfTEC and purchased irons from them (it was one not inside a Golfsmith). He got a complete professional fitting and custom ordered his clubs through them for almost exactly what the irons would have cost if he had gone to golf store and purchased from them. In that case the irons were TaylorMade, but I would assume they may have similar deals for most brands.

There is one advantage to using Mizuno that no one has mentioned and that is that Mizuno has tech vans that travel to many of the big box retail golf stores (such as Golfsmith and Golf Galaxy) a few times a year and will adjust your clubs free of charge (they will adjust loft and lie). And just as a note - I was at Golf Galaxy today and decided to hit the MP-57's just to see what they felt like. I'm in love with the MP-52's, but had not hit the 57's in at least a year. I hit both side by side. The 52's were a little more forgiving, but I was surprised they 57's were not as unforgiving as I thought I remembered. It did seem like they might have a slightly lower trajectory, but I'm not positive. Of course this was just sampling the demo 6 irons on the simulator over the course of about 20-25 shots total.

PiKapp23- The fitter I would go to would be a store a couple of miles from me called The Complete Golfer. The site is http://completegolfer.us/
They seem pretty indepth, and I figure I will give them a call to get a feel for what they can offer me. Let me know what you think.

I have actually seen others on this forum mentioning this company and they have spoken highly of them. If you're planning on going to Golfsmith anyway, you might ask them how much a professional fitting is and what all they do just to compare to this place.

Maybe if some of the people who have been to this facility can give you some feedback on their thoughts regarding the process and cost. You could even post a new thread with the company name in title, as this will be more likely to get some of these people to respond.

I did the same test as PiKapp23, interesting, same result (well I compared MP-60, MP-57, MP-52, MX-200 and MX-25)- MP-57 had lowest flight (even than MP-60 for some reason?) but that is I guess due to my relatively slower swing speed 82 to 85 mph...
If money is an issue and you do not need special adjustments in club length I think MX-25 could be the winner as well (lie change should not be a problem). I truly like MX-25 with TT DG SL Stiff shaft - but I need a longer clubs and will go to other Miz's clubs. You can find them on e-bay really cheap now...

Fitting should not be an extra. If you are buying from a retail store they should have someone on staff that can fit you or you are in the wrong store. The fitting process may not be the most in depth that money can buy and may just be hitting balls on a lie board, trying shafts of different lengths, flexes and weights and using some impact tape; just make sure it's done. Take your time and find what's right for your swing, your eye and your pocketbook. It's a decision you will live with for a long time. Don't rush it, enjoy the search and the process. You will be happy you did it right every time you tee it up.
