what should I get to replace my 3 wood

I am looking to replace my old adams 3wood. I am an intermediate golfer and I was wondering if you guys have any suggestions. First off should I get a 3 wood or a hybrid

I am currently looking at

callaway X (I have one hybrid in place of my 5 wood and love it)

But I am open to any suggestions

check the 3 wood question on the same page of your post. If you are going for a new one, I'm not sure you will find anything better than the old Sonartecs and Steelheads -- maybe better shafts.

replace your 3wood with another 3wood, lol. a hybrid is not anything like a 3wood. Do you carry a 5wood? If your bag setup is D,3,5,whatever... then yes, you replace the 3wood with another one. But if your bag is set up D,?,hybrids/irons on down, then i suggest possibly a strong 5 or even a 4wood. It all depends on what you want. In my honest opinion, do not go with titleist if your handicap is a true 30+... the heads are too small and very unforgiving. callaway is good for mid to higher handicappers, and so is taylormade. You probably want something with a larger face and more forgiveness, unless you plan on dropping that handicap below a 10 within one season.

a 3 wood and a hybrid arent interchangable. a typical 3 wood has 15* of loft while a strong hybrid will have 18* or 19* of loft. therefore, a strong hybrid would have the same degree of loft as a 5 wood or a 2 iron. so essentially, a strongly lofted hybrid, a 5 wood, and 2 iron all have the same loft. now, you could get a 3 wood and a hybrid, depending on what the other clubs are in your bag. i would suggest anything from the taylormade burner line. i have the burner driver, 3 wood, and hybrid and i love all of them.

so, to summerize, a 3 wood is its own thing and a hybrid can be a substatue for a 5 wood (depending on the loft) but not a 3 wood. and i suggest anything from the burner line.

Be very careful about that... just because the loft is the same does not mean you will hit it the same. Yes, a 5wood has 18 of loft and a 3hybrid has 18 of loft. HOWEVER, the hybrid is significantly SHORTER than the 5wood... thus, the 5wood TYPICALLY hits it farther than the 3hybrid. I'm not saying that some people can't hit a 3hybrid as far as a 5wood because I'm one of them. Just be careful that you take into consideration a hybrid and a wood are NOT the same, NOR very interchangeable. A hybrid, is typically used to replace the long irons, and not the fairway woods. I DO agree however, that a 2hybrid with say 15 or 16 degrees of loft would be the closest thing to a 5wood, but the characteristics will be different (trajectory, shot shaping ability, and distance).

Where the old wooden 3-woods had 17° loft, the modern steel ones have only about 15° loft. This can make them a little tough for aspiring golfers like you or aging ones like me.

I go with a 4-wood. The steel ones have 17 or 17.5° loft, just like an old wooden 3-wood, and still hit the ball nice and far. After all, if the loft standards hadn't changed, they'd be 3-woods!

Strong lofted hybrids are no easier to hit than strong lofted fairway woods. 19 or 20° is a plenty strong enough place for most recreational players to start with the hybrids in their bags, and that follows the 4-wood in the lineup pretty naturally.

I think the Taylormade R7 draw fairway woods are very good clubs shallow face and solid to hit my dad plays them and other than I somehow hook the ball 7 out of 10 times I love the sound and feel of these clubs my dads a high handicapper and he hits them well.

The problem with the old Sonartecs is that they are harder to get in the air for an average player. My father is a 12 hdcp and i got him the new Exotics 3wd. They look just like the old sonartecs, but they get the ball up in the air and they are HOT of the face!!! I hit the older model that has a higher certer of gravity, but I am a lower hdcp and don't want the ball to get any higher.

Trust me, just try it once and let me know what you think.

I just got a used Sonarted S-001. Club has gotten great reviews. Got it very cheap on the internet. Too bad this company went under. I also looked at Adams, Nickent, and Cleveland (Hibore)

I have recently changed to a square head 3 wood which I love. Much more consistant and I find the ball landing exactly where I want it. I would have a look at the Nike Sumo2 3 wood. really good value and I have just changed to it and find that the square is better once you get used to it.

Have a demo of the club I am sure you will like it.

I would demo the sumo before you buy , I have the 3 wood and tried the irons and I did not like any of it, so I never tried the driver. I can see the sumo 3 wood being good off the tee cause its so huge but it sucks off the deck unless you have a perfect fairway lie. I went back to my 2006 cleveland launcher its so much better and you can hit it out of the rough with ease let alone the fairway. Sometimes these huge heads especially when they are squared is not a good thing imo.
