My girlfriend's birthday is coming up and I'm thinking about getting her a starter set of clubs. I know, I know not very romantic. But she has shown an interest in golfing and I want to get her off on the right foot. The one time she has went to the range with me she brought along some of her dad's old blades. I hit the 7 iron pretty well, but that's another thread.

Anyway, here is the setup I'm thinking of going with (all in ladies flex graphite except the putter obviously)

14* Cleveland Ladies W series offset driver
22* Cleveland Ladies W series offset 7 wood ..OR..22* Ladies Nike CPR hybrid
30* Ladies Nike CPR 6 hybrid
38* 8 iron Gigagolf Callaway or Ping clone
46* PW Gigagolf Callaway or Ping clone
56* SW Gigagolf Callaway or Ping clone
Ping G5i Craze-E putter 33" and 4* flat (my old putter)

TWO QUESTONS:
1) do you guys think that this is a pretty good setup for a beginner?

2) Would you go with the 7 wood or 22* hybrid? The CPR would have a shorter shaft for more control but the 7 wood would have a deeper center of gravity and and longer shaft for more swing speed (thus it might perform better for a slower swing). The CPR does have a fairly large "footprint" so the CG would be deeper than a lot of hybrids. The cost of the two is identical, so that is not an issue.

I hope to order this setup fairly soon. I can get the driver, 7wood or 22 hybrid, and 30 hybrid for $100 new. Irons should run about $85 new in the stock graphite.

Thanks for any input!!!!

if it helps at all my wife plays...

14* component driver
Cleveland W series 3 and 7 woods
Cobra Baffler 4h and 5h
component irons 5i-SW similar to old Nike Slingshot
component mallet putter

total set cost - about $500
and I too bought her some of the clubs as a present... although it was her anniversery gift...

we started with just the driver and irons... then added the woods and hybrids later

just a note: this summer will be her 4th year golfing, although she missed much of this year do to eye surgery.

I think you aksed about SO's golfing in another thread... here's my experience...

She started with a series of 4 private lessons that tought her the fundamentals (supposed to be semi-private, but we lucked out). From there we went to the driving range 3-4 times, then she started joining me... We would play twilight or other off times. For the first two years she didn't keep score... she just hit 1-2 tee shots, then if no ball was hit far or well, we would just pick her up and let her hit an approach from a good distance, then a few chips and putts on and around the green. This meant we were'nt holding people up knocking a ball 30-40 yds at a time, and she was concentraiting on having fun and on individual shots instead of total score. It was also easy for her to be happy about hitting a great drive or approach even if her overall score was bad. Now she pretty much gets it in play most of the time off the tee and is in those positions on her own... she now keeps score (with occaisional pick-ups after excessive strokes). Now she is happy to play with others and can keep pace on the busiest of days... she has two recorded birdies, one at Pine Needles, and she truly loves playing with me. Also, I would usually only give her a couple quick reminders on the course and save lesson type things for the range.

Getting my wife into golf was great for us and I love taking little golf vacations with her each year.

My buddies wife plays and I go out as a single more often than not so Ive played with my fair share of women.

Go heavy on the woods. If your going to pick one part of the bag to pay special attention to buy nice woods. Almost all amatuer women that Ive seen dont hit down on the ball nearly as hard as their male counterparts so they do much better with the sweeping swing of a 7 wood than they would with a 4 iron.

Clubs I havent thrown in a lake yet

Driver: R7 CGB max 9.5*
Woods: R5 3, and 5 woods
Hybrids: Rescue Burner 22*, 25*Irons: CG Red 6 - PWWedges: CG12 52*, 56*, 60*Putter: 1 of 100 handmade pebble beach http://scottycameronblog.com/2007/09...pebble-beach/#Vegas golf sucks!!

My only recommendation is, unless she likes the cutsie pink shafts et.al., not to get too hung up on the "ladies" sets. My wife is taller, and when it was time for her to get a good set of her own, we landed on "mens" clubs with a senior flex. The quality of selection was much better, especially in off the rack sets.

As for make up, it's Driver, 3w, 5w, 3H, 4H, 5H, 6-PW, 52*, 56*, putter.

In David's bag....

Driver: Titleist 910 D-3;  9.5* Diamana Kai'li
3-Wood: Titleist 910F;  15* Diamana Kai'li
Hybrids: Titleist 910H 19* and 21* Diamana Kai'li
Irons: Titleist 695cb 5-Pw

Wedges: Scratch 51-11 TNC grind, Vokey SM-5's;  56-14 F grind and 60-11 K grind
Putter: Scotty Cameron Kombi S
Ball: ProV1

Don't buy your girlfriend golf clubs for your birthday, I repeat, Don't buy your girlfriend golf clubs for her birthday! Buy them on a different occasion. Buy her what she wants and you will be better off in the long run. I have been married for 16 years, I should know.

That's good advice! It really is. But her birthday falls one week before Valentine's Day. She knows I already have a very nice cabin booked in the Smoky Mountains for 3 nights that weekend. By cabin I mean hot tub, whirlpool, fireplace, gameroom, 3 TV's, gas grill, nice place...the works.

She's a bit of a tomboy anyway. She breeds horses and was on a nationally acclaimed rodeo team at UT-Martin. But I'm not intimidated haha. Regardless I think she will appreciate it. She likes to buy golf equipment for me and her dad, but just won't get into it herself because she hates to do something she's not good at yet (very competitive). She is somehow convinced that if she needs to learn how to hit her dad's old stiff shafted blades if she wants to really learn a good swing. That is very very admirable, but I don't think it's practical. Plus her best friend that got us together is really getting into the game and leaving her in the dust. Maybe I'm trying to convince myself here....haha Anyway, great advice.

14* Cleveland Ladies W series offset driver

Due to some of the advice so far, I think I might concentrate on the fairway woods a little more. I'm thinking the top of the set could look like this. The gaps are a little smaller. Basically a 5* gap setup.

14* Cleveland Ladies W series offset driver 19* Cleveland Ladies W series offset 5 wood 25* Cleveland Ladies W series offset 9 wood 30* Ladies Nike CPR 6 hybrid Then later I can go with a 35, 40, 45, 50, 55 iron/wedge setup. Something like the Ping G2EZ had out a few years ago.
