My wife is from Michigan and has planned a 2 week vacation there (Detroit area) with her family this summer. Now I need to find some good courses to play while I'm there. I played some courses there a few years back. The Majestic was the name of one of them. Keep in mind I don't want to spend a fortune, any ideas Michiganders?

Hey i live in Michigan and i cant think of a number of great courses. Rackham Golf Course is a nice easy course that is right next to the Detroit
Zoo, right on Woodward. It's fun and challenging at the same time and runs about 18 dollars to walk 18. Some other great course are Shepard's hollow. Bit more pricy but a great couse. Others include St. Johns and Fox Run.

Rackham is decent, it was originally a Donald Ross design, but the front 9 has been re-routed to accommodate the expressway, the back 9 is still fairly true to Ross. Pontiac Country Club is another decent public course in the area thats worth a shot.

Both Shepherds Hollow and Pontiac Country Club are great choices. Lyon Oaks in Milford is also very nice. If you are going to be around for a couple weeks you may want to consider going up to Gaylord for a couple days. It's about 3 hours north of Detroit, but has about twenty top quality courses. Westwynd in Rochester is also outstanding. It is the sister course of Wyndgate, one of the more exclusive private clubs in the area. When are you going to be up here?

I'll see about going up north. My father-in-law lives in some small town about 3 hours out of Detroit. The trip is planned for the end of July, but normally we get out there 2 or 3 times every summer for a few days each time. (We fly for free) I will check out the courses you suggested.

Where exactly does he live? The courses that have been mentioned are all within 30 to 60 minutes of Detroit. Depending on where he lives, there may be better options.

We have alot of good courses around Detroit. If you can tell us what part of Detroit your heading too we can be of more help. Are you going to Detroit or a town outside of Detroit? hate to have you drive farther than needed when they may have good courses near you.

She has family all over the Detroit area. We are staying in Rochester Hills with her Aunt. Her sister lives in Warren and her other Aunt lives in Sterling Heights. I don't care too much about the drive as long as it stays under an hour or so.

That makes it easier. courses to play within 30minutes or less of rochester hills. 30-50 dollar range 18/with cart. can get the phone numbers from her phone book and all easy to drive to. Maybe when you get here we could hook up for a round during the week. I'm 55 and hit the ball pretty well.

I'll second anybody who says Shephard's Hollow. I played there when I went up for the 2004 Ryder Cup and had a fantastic time, everything was in wonderful shape and its not that expensive - maybe around $100.

We also played Fieldstone and The Orchards. Between those two, I thought Fieldstone was actually pretty nice, especially for a true public access course.

Of course, you could also always try to find someone who belongs to Oakland Hills or Crystal Downs, but that's always a shot in the dark. I loved Oakland Hills for the Ryder Cup. Also, if you know anybody at UM, I've been told they have a very nice course but its private unless you're somehow a Wolverine affiliate.

If you're going up north, I'd highly recommend trying to make it to Arcadia Bluffs. I've never been there, but it looks absolutely phenomenal.

1. Boulder Pointe

All of these are very solid choices. And reasonably priced. Most are easily within 30 minutes of where you are staying. I would highly reccomend checking out Shepherds Hollow. It is about 30 minutes North West of Rochester and although it is on the higher end $75-100, it's not outrageous. As the date gets closer we should try to set up a Sand Trap Outing for a day.

Thank you for all your suggestions. I think I have played Blackheath before. Now I only hope that the wife will leave me alone long enough to play 5 or 6 of those courses. I'd like to have company so I'll be in touch.

    • Day 9 (10 May 24) - Played 18 with a good friend and one of his coworkers.  Was not a solid scoring round, but lots of opportunites for course management. Had a blast as we truly "got our money's worth" as my friend jokingly said.  Had some solid shots and finished the round with a solid birdie on 17 (the only really good hole of the day).
    • I always wonder when people say they "tried" a golf swing out. I thought I had a topic on it, but when I searched DuckDuckGo for "trying" a golf swing or method limited to this site… "trying"+a+golf+swing+or+method+site:thesandtrap.com at DuckDuckGo DuckDuckGo. Privacy, Simplified. This very topic was the first search result. 🤣
    • I think you can get away with even a 5I or a hybrid or something. I don't think you need to hit 7I off the tee.
    • Yeah this is good to remember. Handicap is ranking where a high handicap player is most likely to shoot a worse score than a scratch golfer. Though you'd think a super narrow shorter hole would be relatively high handicap (as in close to #1 or #2 because a scratch golfer can hit 4i-SW and have a good look at birdie frequently whereas a high handicap is gonna be in jail or OB a ton? I guess it being short disqualifies it? I have long noticed that as a long hitting mid-handicapper I get an advantage playing in tournaments against players where I get 3-4 strokes because those are usually the par 5s that I can reach or nearly reach in 2.
