God no. Please don't do

I couldn't agree agree more.

One of my favorite quotes in golf is from Jay Haas. I know I'm in for a long Wednesday when I look in my pro-am partner's bag and see... "Iron head covers and a ball retriever. "

"take a couple weeks off - then quit for good"

To think iron headcovers slow down play is ridiculous...slow players slow down play. You pull your club out of the bag, and at the same time you slip that cover off and toss it in your pocket or wherever you want. When you are done, you wipe your club off and put it back in your bag while also putting the headcover on. Chances are you need to wait for someone else to shoot when you are done anyway, so you shoud have that extra 1 second it might take to get the headcover on. Again, if someone is slowing down play and they have iron headcovers, it's because they are slow, not because of the covers. People waste a lot more time addressing the ball then they do taking headcovers off.

Right after I got my AP2s last year I got some headcovers. Why? Because my bag is constantly tossed in and out of my trunk, and it stays their during the week. Some character marks from playing is fine, but I don't need my clubs beat to shit from banging into each other in my trunk. If all my clubs did was go around the golf course then I likely wouldn't bother with the covers...different people have different reasons.

Last I heard Buick was driven by the No.1 player in the world. I do wear socks with sandals sometimes to keep my feet from fryin and banged up forged heads look like sh*t AND your nuts if you think they slow down play!Ya want to look and admire them, take off the covers when you get home set 'em in your living room by the TV and stare. Also banged up sh*tty lookin irons = less resale value and you can take THAT to the bank.

You actually think with all his money Tiger is cruising around Florida with a buick? Think again, try something a little more sexy than a Buick

Wanna use headcovers or not is the own person's prerogative.

it's getting pretty deep in here. Kind of contradicting yourself there...however you are right....it is my prerogative and I will NEVER use an iron cover....EVER!. Clubs hot looking female...an apples to oranges comparison (unless you are trying to impress your golf mates with purty, shinny clubs ) I too exercise and take care of my body but I wear cruddy clothes while working out and sometimes eat off a paper plate. So people that don't use iron headcovers are disrespectful? That statement about made me want to puke. Feel free to use your iron headcovers all you want and keep your irons nice and pretty....I'll take mine with some war wounds

An easy alternative is to put a couple of towels across the top of your golf bag... Use one from the front to back and one from side to side... This will keep your irons from banging around so much in the bag... Normal wear and tear will obviously still occur, but you won't get excessive dings on your forged clubs when riding in a cart... That being said, there is something nice about walking and hearing irons click a little bit... Especially since we can't hear the sound of metal spikes any more.

I'm with Rory on this and banged up forged irons look like sh*t, period, end of story. The guys that don't use 'em are the same guys with caked mud and grass on their clubs. Character, whatever.

PS- I know Buick ended there relationship with Tiger, but.......you know what I meant.

I just throw a towel overmy clubs. Keeps them from banging around and gives me access to it after every shot to whipe down my clubs. Its a simple, no fess solution.

p.s. I have to say that my clubs look far from new, and I like it that way. golf clubs are made to be played and they get naturally dinged up over time if they are used even by the most anal retentive, overly protective golfer (last statement not aimed at anybody in particular)

Kind of lumping everyone together there eh. You are anal about your clubs getting dinged…my pet peeve is keeping my clubs clean. That "character" word seems to bother you so from now on I'll just call it "ware". I guarantee that my clubs function exactly as they should (even with a few scars). No dried up clumps of mud on my clubs just ordinary "ware". I do not care if my clubs appear used….end of story

You guys love to put words in folk's mouths.

Re-read your statement…"

The guys that don't use 'em are the same guys with caked mud and grass on their clubs ." Pretty cut-n-dry if you ask me and in no way did apex53 put words in your mouth. And to paraphrase what indacup said, it's each players "prerogative" whether to use headcovers or not. I choose not, a little bag chatter never hurt anybody.

Come on guys. Let´s calm down a bit.

My intention when writing this thread was understanding a bit more how the forged would react compared to the cast steel.

I have simply used a towel interwoven between the irons to reduce the clang and resultant dings, but, at some point you must accept they are simply tools to play a game and clubs with substantial clatter and wear still play like they are new. One thing you can do is take a new set and hit balls off a cartpath with each iron a few times, so your never worry but appearances again just performance. Not kidding here, lots of truth to this. Another idea is to buy an old banged up forged set at a golf store/auction and play with them. Eventually you won't care what your clubs look like just how they play.
Clubs with any noticeable wear depreciate a lot so worrying about wear which is inevitable with play is not worth the effort.

Come on guys. Let´s calm down a bit.

Cast clubs do not ding as they are hard enough to withstand the clangs. Most Ping iron no matter how old have very little clatter. Some forged clubs are totally smashed after one round on a bumpy cart path without any protection from hitting themselves.

Oh, by the way, just in case anyone is wondering. Forged Mizuno MX-23 irons WILL scratch the sole if your father in law takes a practice swing over concrete and makes contact... No one tried to duplicate the test on a cast iron.

This thread is one of the three that come up all the time which there is NEVER a true right or wrong answer...but everyone has a DEFINITE opinion:

1) Headcovers yes or no?
2) Whats best?....Forged or Cast?
3) Who's best?....Jack or Tiger?

Close fourth would be a personal favorite of mine: "Ginger or Mary Ann"?
