Tell me if this is stupid or smart...

My iron play is alright, but not as good as my woods.
So on par 3's I use either my 3 wood or 5 wood
I just do half a smooth swing and follow through and it goes and rolls right up to the dance floor. That is everytime, my playing partner gets a heck of a laugh out of it, but they are hardly ever on the green, always either end up short or miss it left and right.
While my woods I get it striaght down the middle and onto the dance floor.
Anyone else thinks this is stupid...

I am very short on my clubs... my PW only goes about 80-100 and my 6i if hit flush goes 150ish

just wondering if I am the only one doing this, and looking stupid on the course, but if I am the stupid one, why is it that on every par 3 I am putting for birdie...

If you know you can get it on the green using your putter use your putter.

People usually laugh at other people because something about that other person makes them uncomfortable.

I would keep practicing with your irons. I dont think it's "stupid" it's just where your game is at this point. I honestly believe everyone goes through transitions. As you get better, you'll look back with amusement on the days where you would only play par 3's with a 5 or 3wood. I was the opposite of you. My friends use to laugh at me because I couldnt hit woods and always hit irons off of tees. They use to call me Lou Gerihg, the iron man. For me, I know I would have quit the game if I kept trying to hit driver when I was a 20+ handicap. I would only hit 4 irons off every tee no matter how long the hole. Like I said earlier, it was a "transition" and learning experience for me...or probably more of a mental block, but it kept me in the fairway. I kept going to the range and eventually graduated to a 5 wood, then a 3 wood and evetually a driver. P.S. Putting for birdie on a par 3 is fun not matter what club you hit to get there...

Stupid? Absolutely not! You're using what for you, at this point, is the right club to get the job done.

What I would offer though, is that your game is unlikey to improve much if you're that uncomfortable with your iron play. The length that you hit your irons is less important than the consistency and accuracy with which you hit them. A couple of lessons might be in order if you really want to start knocking strokes off your game.

In the meantime though, you don't draw pictures on the scorecard, you only write numbers on it...... An "ugly" 3 beats the heck out of a "pretty" 5!

That reminds me of what on older member told me when I was younger. "Son, the box is there for a number, not a story", and it always stuck with me.

As it has been more or less said here:

It is not "how" that counts, it is "how many"

Over time as your game improves your strategys may change as well.

That is not stupid at all. From what I see of your club makeup and your self described way of playing the game, you seem to have a very pragmatic approach to the game. You have already realized that "it's not how but how many ." That is to be commended!

From what I see and hear, you are playing to your strengths and away from your weaknesses. One thing alluded to earlier is that you can't really play away from irons too much since they are in the approach zone so many times on the course. Take my word for it, because iron play is probably the weakest part of my game as well. While you are on the course keep using the game you have, and if you want to improve something do that on the range. But for now, know that you are out playing your partners on these holes even if they can reach your 5 wood holes with 8 irons. And FWIW 150 on the 6 iron is not that short....I hope

Yeah we played a round this past weekend... and it was my second time out this year, I broke 100 for the first time on New Years day a 97 and then this past saturday I shot a 96, should of shot in the 80's... but I 5 putted and 4 putted and duff one... (on a par 3 using an Iron... trying to muscle it)
I have only been golfing about 6-7 months and practing everyday swinging in my garage.
I can hit my irons, but not as solid as I would like... my only iron that I have trouble with most of the time is the 6i other then that 7i-SW is good... but short on distance.
I can't wait till this weekend to go back out and play...

I can't beleive I shot a 96 this past weekend and beat 4 guys in my group that have been playing for 3+ years and the the guy that beat me shot a 95... they are ususally shooting in the 80's but I guess with my good playing threw them off their game,... espically my driver... striaght...

Thanks everyone, by the way this game is way addicting... and I thought Archery was...
Archery does not compare to golf skills at all... and way more money in golf, with my golfing buddies then my archery partners...

This is a little off topic but it might help.

I always felt the same way about the 6 iron in my set. It was the iron where the loft started to "disappear" and I felt like I had to help lift it a little. Of course the long term solution is practice. But a short term solution I found that worked immediately was to buy a demo 6 iron in a Super Game Improvement design. If you don't mind blending your irons, you can go through local bins and pick out a SGI 6 iron that you love and will hit the ball high and straight 10 times out of 10. Since most stores are flushed with 6 iron demos, you can pick one up in a new style and brand name for $20-$30 max. Mine is money from midrange. I've never had more confidence in being at those mid range distances. Good Luck!

Johnny Miller once hit a green with every club he had in the bag from 100 yds, including driver and putter, so no it is not stupid. I'd rather have a nice and easy 3/4 4iron swing than hitting a 5 iron fall-out

    • Folks, I am having some difficulty understanding how this is fair and equitable;   The USGA says that handicaps in a fourball match play are based off of the low handicap in the group.   For example; players A and B are partners, C and D are partners, Handicaps are A = 18, B = 23, C&D are both 19. therefore B gets 5 strokes and C&D both get 1 stroke. Player B gets 5 strokes even though C&D, his opponents, are only 4 strokes less in handicap. Somehow, to me, this doesn't seem fair and equitable.    Anyone have clarifying thoughts?   Hopefully I got the terminology correct.
    • Yeah, I drove out a few times just to check out  the landing area and still was surprised at where the ball ended up with what I thought were perfectly placed drives.
    • Not sure I've ever seen five Xs in a row. Damn.
