Those who already have Skycaddie's SG5 may already know of the upgrade since I was forwarded this information from a friend that has one.

If you're researching GPS systems like I have for the last two months Skycaddies new upgrade sounds enticing. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated in hopes of me narrowing down my decision:

New SkyCaddie software upgrade package is now available!

Course and Feature Expansion Package

Take advantage of these new features to help you play your best golf. This Course and Feature Expansion Package software upgrade allows you to store up to 20 courses on your SkyCaddie and automatically gives you green depth information. You can also use the Auto Distance Meter feature to measure your drives and fine-tune your short game. Mark your ball location and watch the meter as you move toward your target. Keep your watch in your bag, because your SkyCaddie will give you time of day on the screen full time.
20 course download capability
•Depth of Green
•Time of day
•Auto distance meter from last mark
•International Icons (Available for SkyCaddie SG5 only)

Yeah, and you too can have a clock, "international icons," and more for the low, low price of only $19.95!

What a joke.

Features that other GPS units have had for a while now (except for maybe "international icons")...

Is there anything Skycaddy doesn't charge for? What's an icon worth these days?

I looked on the SC website but don't see this information...I have an SG5 and am interested to see what this is.

See this is where I'd actually think companies make themselves seem cheap if it's a paid "upgrade" or expansion. When I mean is increasing the number of courses on the device (apparently to 20) through software. If you can add the "space" for more courses through software then it was always an artificial software limitation anyway and I think that's pretty poor. They're giving the impression that you're adding something "new" when really they are just (I think) trying to limit the number of courses locally on the device for subscription purposes.

If this is a free update then cool, whatever they add is gravy. If you have to pay for this then I think they suck...

As Erik mentioned - just got confirmation from my friend that says it's a one time fee of $19.95.

GPS are alien to me hence my multiple threads asking for information. I like the feeling of knowing the yardage without guessing but I don't have enough golf buddies with different units to get real life test drive.

Sounds to me like a lot of BS that you dont really need. Id love to have a golf GPS, but Im waiting for the price to come down a bit more.
I cant see paying $200-$400 for something like this. Hopefully the prices of golf GPS units will drop like car GPS units did.
When they offer simple units that show yardage to the middle of the green and cost $100-$150, then I will consider one.

I couldn't imagine golfing without mine now (and my friends would say the same thing for that matter). Yeah this upgrade should be free, but I will most likely get it because it's worth it for me to have 20 courses on my SkyCaddie. The one thing I don't understand is why didn't they have 20 courses from the get go?

I don't own one but have played with friends with one and it really does make a big difference. Check out the prices on this site

CheapCaddie they have some listed for reasonable prices in that range. I think I will break down and pick one up this year myself.

Seeing that I only play 2 or 3 courses in the summer. I couldn't think of having to pay for a annual fee AND 20 bones just for a few lesser things that I wouldn't use.
