I wanna experiment using a driver head with a steel shaft... If I brought a head and shaft to a shop, would they have a problem with putting them together?

I think it would depend on the hosel/shaft tip dimensions. if they are compatible then they should be able to put them together.

Just kind of curious why? What brought this about? I'm kind of interested in what you find out, you could also buy the epoxy from golf smith and do it yourself, Let us know what the results are.

Technically, I dont think you will have a problem.

Logically, and from a performance standard, I think you might. Most driver heads are weighted for graphite shafts. It might be hard to find a steel shaft that will work without significantly effecting your SW.

I had this done recently after I experimented with a shorter shaft(44"). I had my Great Big Bertha II 415 reshafted with a TT Dynalite tipped/cut stiff. I absolutely love it, and unless it is broken or stolen, it will remain in my bag for a long time. I lost a little distance(heavier shaft=slower swing speed) but gained a lot of consistency. The only problem that the builder had was due to the Callaway bore through hosel, it presented him with some difficulties with the shaft tip through the sole. He did a great job, and I am vey happy with the end result. The looks I get at the course and range when I pull out this large cc driver with a steel shaft are great. I would talk to a club builder about your options with different heads and shafts before I purchased anything. Of course, most will try to talk you out of it, "there are modern graphite shafts that have the same charactersitics as steel", but stick to your guns. A typical steel shaft will cost between $20-$40(or cheaper), which is alot less than most graphite, so they don't make as much on the sale.

If you go to a good club maker (one who has been in business since before metal headed clubs were the norm!) they'll be able to sort you out without a problem. It's all down to getting the swing weight sorted as swinging a heavy shaft with a light head isn't a nice feeling! Titleist still offer steel shafts as custom orders in their drivers as well if you prefer to go down the OEM route.
