Colbert Hills in Manhattan, Kansas is a very long course. The course is laid out over an expanse of rolling hills. The green fees include the cart. No one walks the course. When the college there (KSU) hosts tournaments, the players walk, but are shuttled from green to tee. There are several green-to-tee gaps that take minutes to get through - by cart. I asked the pro there if I could walk the course on a day when it was less busy (a cool day, like tomorrow) and he said "If you wanna walk 8 miles, you're more than welcome to!"

8 miles of HILLS from the frist tee to the 18th green! Would you walk it?

...at what distance do you give up on your notion of walking?

I'm a walker within reason. I played a course in VA that took minutes to get between the 9th gree and 10th tee via cart. If the course runs the usual 3.5-4 miles, it's plenty walkable.

I asked the pro there if I could walk the course on a day when it was less busy (a cool day, like tomorrow) and he said "If you wanna walk 8 miles, you're more than welcome to!"

If it's not busy and I'm just out to play a leisurely round (read: started in the morning and really don't care when I get done as long as I'm always moving forward and not stuck) then yeah, I'd walk it. There's more than just distance that would go into that decision, but with water and a couple of energy bars or something I think an 8 mile course would be an interesting experience. I'm not at all saying that I'd want to do it every round.

That being said, I don't generally like these ridiculously spread-out layouts. It's just too disruptive to the flow of the game, IMO. I mean, several MINUTES from green to the next tee by cart? That's absurd. I'd rather just not play a course that's set up like that.

It is a bit absurd, but the course's design was dictated by the terrain - and very creatively layed out, not just forced in by an architect. It is really an amazing, tour-caliber course.

That's cool that it's built into the terrain. Too often these monsters are just built for vanity sake and to force people into carts, as far as I can tell. If I had a chance, I'd like to give this one a chance.

I will never say that spaced-out courses cannot be amazing, just that the concept is absurd.

I'm a diehard walker, and have played Colbert, and definately would NOT walk it. Stagg Hill, Rolling Meadows, Wamego, CC, hell even Alvamar, but not Colbert.

I've spent most of my life golfing - the rest I've just wasted.

I've walked worse. Quail Hollow (see sig) has a par 3 that's about 200 yards straight downhill. You have to walk down it, and then back up it, and then another 3/4 mile to the 5th tee box. It's pretty ridiculous, and very hilly. It's probably pretty similar to the course you are talking about. Only not as good.

I would walk it if at least one other in my foursome did. I don't like being the only walker on a course that long.

I'm down to a 10 handicap. At this rate, I'll get to scratch at 90 years old!

If I can't walk it, I'm not going to play it.

Being in my mid-60s and being that I like to walk, I would say 5-miles is reasonable for 18-holes. I could do more as I have walked 36-holes in one day a number of times. But a 5-mile round is good exercise for me.

I walk every time I play. But if I have paid for the cart, I'm riding the cart.

Man I love to walk, but that would be a bit much for me. I could do it if that was what the group wanted to do, but I am ussally the only one who wants to walk in my group. I do like the convenience of the cart, but there's something about being out there on your own.

Colbert Hills' little brother in Newton, KS is around 7 miles around. I have walked most of it (ran out of time due to a very slow 2some in a cart). The difference between Sand Creek and Colbert are the hills, IMO. I am pretty hard-core but I think I might have to gulp a few times before I took CH on. I might have to forego that beatiful view on number 7. I don't know if I could survive the hike up or the thrill of the trip down.

Another course that would be a real pain to walk in Kansas is the (I'm afraid) late, Cottonwood Hills. I loved this course but I'm afraid that it is gone for the foreseeable future, a victim of the current economic situation and some really unfortunate investment strategy. It was a real hike around, full of beautiful views, challenging holes, and miles between some holes. Goodbye, I'm afraid, at least for a while, Cottonwood.

Yeah, that's a sad misfortune. Cottonwood seemed doomed from the beginning, though. It's too hard and too tricky for most, too many blind shots that seem perfect until you get to your ball and it's in a bunker - or worse. The course was designed to beat good players, but wasn't managed right. I only got to it one time. Everytime I'm in Hutch I'll play PDCC if I'm looking for a humbling beat down or Carrey Park if I'm trying to shoot even par.

There's a (relatively)new course in Spring Hill, KS (south of Olathe) that is a Colbert/Spann design - Sycamore Ridge. Similarly priced, beautifully designed - amazing. The front isn't too bad to walk, but the back - with the hills to tire you physically and the woods to tire you mentally - quite a course! http://www.sycamoreridgegolf.com/course.html

Our course runs 7 miles, as the crow flies, and I am more than willing to walk more, so I am not sure what my limit is. Long walks between holes are annoying, but a few seconds of rest and catching my breath usually fixes that.
But I live in Texas, and when it gets to 110 degrees or so, I usually don't want to walk all 18. Sitting is nice at times like those.

The loss of Cottonwood if it is in fact lost is a terrible comment on the state of golf, IMHO. A course that was listed as high as 5th in the list of new courses you could play in 2008 is closed in 2009. I'm really afraid that it won't be the last great course to close in the near future as the economy puts irresistable pressure on economically marginal tracts. The Cottonwood developer was quoted in the local paper as "assuring" the community that CH would be reopened in April but I will believe it when I see it. If it does, I promise to the Sand Trap community, I WILL WALK IT!. It needs to be done now, before it is gone . . . maybe forever. (Even those words depress me.)

    • Some quick notes. Mine arrived yesterday, and on Monday I used a student's in his lesson with him. The touch interface is very responsive. Almost iPad-like. Not at all like crappy touch screens that lag or where you're not sure you hit the button. A lot of the smaller (negative) issues are software based, so I think they can iterate on them and improve them: I named myself "Erik J. Barzeski" and so my little user "circle" shows up as "EJ." First, stop assuming someone's initials. Second, when I choose "Edit Users" the only option to edit is… to remove the user. I can't edit my name or whether I'm a righty or a lefty. That's not "editing" a user. I created "Student Lefty" and "Student Righty" as guest profiles, and think they should add colors to the little circles. It could let you more quickly find the person you're looking for. Not much of an issue with three, but if you play with a group of ten friends here and there, it would help. There are four different ways to dismiss a screen, which I found funny. You can tap away from a panel, click an "X," click "save/cancel," or click "Done." They could have done Not all clickable areas appear to be tappable. "Power Save" and "Battery Save" are tappable (you can change the settings), but they just say "Power Save : ON" or something. I definitely don't love the shot tracer. In the overhead view, a dot appears where your ball would have landed. But… if you're hitting the same club, every dot is the same color (orange for a 7I). I think the last dot, the last shot, should be a different color. After you've hit five or ten shots, you don't even really know which dot is the new one. The impact camera is more than what's offered by a lot of things (like even the QuadMAX), but at the same time, not all that useful. It's only about six (eight? ten?) frames and it's snot from a not great angle because you hit from so side-on. The hitting area with club data is pretty small. This won't work very well off of grass. And you'll want to move it around lest you wear out your Alignment is super easy. Lay a club down, rest two balls against it… aligned. I do wish it prompted you to align it when you turn it on, even if one of the options was "keep current alignment" if you haven't moved it since last using it (or it never moves in your sim or something). I don't have a subscription yet and may never get one. I don't plan to use Home Tee Hero for much. I may plug it in to GSPro at some point. I think you can connect to it via your WiFi network. As in… it joins your network, and so you can be online and connected to it wirelessly. I'm not sure what the USB-C port is for. The fiducials (club stickers) I have for the GCQuadMAX also work on the Garmin. You don't need to use their larger stickers. Heck, I used the tab from a GC fiducial on Monday and it worked fine. The storage/travel case is well done. It's solid, sturdy. But, oddly, there's no real good place to put the charger and cable. Maybe I can set it in against the back side beneath the handle? I could have used a little pocket for that. The weight is not anywhere near as substantial as it looks. Because the GCQuadMAX is denser, I think it may almost be just as heavy (I think officially it's 7.x pounds for the Quad and 9.x for the R50). Because the unit sits almost directly beside the golf ball, I don't think people are going to be as worried about shanks as they are with the GC units (GC3, GC4/MAX) or other "side-on" units. I do wonder about someone accidentally hitting it off the toe and into what seems to be plexiglass covering the cameras, though. The range UI is nice — you can split screen to show the impact video, the shot data, the range overview of ball flight… etc. If you hook it up to an external display I'm pretty sure you can get three things. Maybe four, with split screens on both? That's all I can think of for now, but I'll be updating this as I go.
    • I am sure they do have software that does that. Manufacturing and design software's are pretty sophisticated now.  If they were to make it all custom, that would not be mass manufacturing that gets them the profits they need. Building a putter one exact way is way cheaper than having to input 300 different combinations. Also, they are selling through big box stores, so they need that one putter. That is why you do not see Edel in golf stores, it is all custom built.  Yea, but PXG is not selling their clubs in big box stores, trying to do bulk sales. They are doing everything custom. So, having multiple options available at no cost adder is a very good business decision that makes it look like they are giving you a deal.  I am not sure Mizuno does that anymore, at least online purchases. When I go to their website, there is no option to customize loft and lie angle. They do that if you get fitted. Also, I am not sure what the price is compared to just buying a set off the shelf at the store.  To me, it could be a perception of no adder, but is it really? Also, if Srixon is selling you clubs at the same price as a big-box store, they are not giving you a deal. So, maybe that customization is built into the price of the club there? The big box store is going to mark up on the irons in addition to what Srixon makes selling to a big box store.

    • Day 9: 12/18/2024 Okay so about 15 minutes of focused mirror work today and I still have the station set up outside my office door so every time I enter or leave I get 1 to 5 extra slow-mo swings in.  The PPJ swing thought is getting better. In terms of PP I need to make sure I keep the attention on using the ground up through the movement and not just "going through the motions".  The J part, I have to focus on my lead sit-bone driving directly away from the ball. I still like to go up and out on that when I lose focus.  Repetitive slow-mo and medium-mo swings are helping.
