im a high handicapper. usually 110. i want some new irons and have narrowed it down i believ. Callaway X-20 or Taylormade Burner Plus. i do wanna improve my game but i need some forgiveness as well. which set u like??

I think both sets you mention will be fine for your needs (as will many other clubs from most manufacturers - find what you like the look and feel of best because this leads to confidence, which should lead to better play). Main thing is to get fit to ensure you have correct shaft flex, lie and length. Getting properly fit is about as important as picking clubs. It hard to improve much without clubs being properly fit for you.

thx for the input. i am thinking about the callaways because i like the diablo woods that are coming out. wasnt sure if anyone had any experience with either set. i have held them both and they both seem pretty nice. can u get ur clubs fitted after u buy them or is that something u do before purchase? if u cant tell i am a rookie so any help would be great

I'm thinking if you are truly a 36 handicapper the best thing you can do for your golf game is get lessons. I started last year as a 21 and finished as a 9.4. I took 4 lessons and practiced a lot. It isn't the arrows, it is the indian.

It's best to do it before purchasing because it can make purchase decision easier (such as which flex shaft to go with and length). Lie angle can be adjust after purchase as can length without too much expense. Flex, though, is something you'll be stuck with unless you were to have them reshafted, which would be an extra expense (reshafting could cost you $200 or more depending on shafts and who does it). If you're sure of flex you need then it shouldn't be that big a deal. If not (and you do not want to get fitted first), fault on the side of 'Regular Flex', as this will work for most people and will allow you to swing easier to help improve your game.

If you are buying at a retail store they will at least help establish the flex needed before purchase and can have the other fitting configurations done upon purchase. And I agree that lessons are very important, possibly even before purchase just because it could help you decide what type of clubs you might want. Some teachers will even help with fitting (at least give you some info on what you might need).

Don't buy a certain set of irons because you like the woods...they don't have to match. Play what fits you best, not what looks best in your bag.

ok well i got the Callaway X-22 and a 56 degree Callaway X Tour today. A sports authority opened today and gave 20% off entire purchase so i pulled the trigger. will be hitting them at the local par 3 9 hole tomorrow.

With all due respect, you don't need new clubs, you need to take lessons.

New clubs won't help you play better, but lessons will.

Good for you on pulling the trigger! Now go and get a couple of lessons and then just play... we aren't out there making money at this game, it's just for fun.

what do Callaways woods have to do with the iron set you pick... I know it's too late, but feel, looks, etc. should be the focus, not which brand. Look at peoples sigs... most of us have a mixed bag because we play what works best for us.

Good luck with the new clubs... Callaway makes great clubs... hopefully you at least made sure you got the right flex shaft, as mentioned that is the most important aspect of being fit. After you develop a consistent swing... I would check lie, length, and grip size, just to be sure.

Wow, you guys give great advice

... As a 36 I'm pretty sure he knows lessons would help... does that mean he shouldn't buy new clubs - HELL NO! Maybe he was playing with a hand-me-down set of blades with cracked grips and a Wal-mart driver... we don't know because he didn't have a sig listing them, and in that case, clubs would be a great idea and investment.

    • Day 24: did a stack session. Worked a bit on downswing feels during breaks.
    • Day 444 - 2025-12-18 Light day of hotel room work. GEARS Summit v2.0 today. Good day.
    • Day 38 (18 Dec 25) - got out in the backyard with grandson this afternoon.  We got into a little game of pitching the ball from about 25yds to a target point just off the asphalt lane behind the backyard.  Goal - just clear it with a quick hop and stop.  Focused on using the wedge swing motion I was talking with the course pro yesterday….smooth and thru just bruising the grass.  In addition to a concentrated focus on technique, it also called for a quiet mind locked in on target point.  Rehearsed this with both the 50° and 55° wedges.
    • I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.
    • I found it entertaining, but the announcing was lousy.  How did the measuring on the final shot start with Rory being closer and being told he won, and then with no explanation it turns out Scottie won?  Weird.
