Non-brand name clubs?

Does anyone use non-brand name clubs? At my fitting yesterday, I hit some irons and woods that the fitter actually builds. They are called Wishon. I was told that the guy that makes these heads was the first to use the forging process that Mizuno uses. They have a very hot face and I hit them very well. The club fitter can retrofit my clubs to the specs that were obtained from my fitting or he can custom build a set of the Wishon clubs. The retrofit is pretty close to the same price as the custom built clubs. I was just curious to see what your thoughts are on these types of clubs.

IN MY OPINION (apprently I need disclaimers stating so, or I get jumped on)The isssue with buying non-brand name clubs is the resale value. They are worth virtually nothing as soon as you take them. As an equipment nut I like buying new equipment every couple/few years and sell my old stuff.

IMO... Tom Wishon is a name brand.

I agree...but there are a lot of "club makers" out there that shovel off POS irons and try to pass them off as custom designs.

I had never heard of Tom Wishon until this fitting but the clubs hit great and look good too. I really liked them. They are expensive though and I had not thought about the re-sale value...that is a good point.

Golf equipment is not something that I would ever use as an investment vehicle. If I can buy equipment that is 40~50% of the cost new, the resale value isn't an issue. Think about this - a brand new set of Nike irons that cost $600 new can be sold for $250 to $300 used in the future. A quality set of irons like those from Golfworks / Hireko / Golfsmith can be built for around $200 to $400. The amount you lose in value is about equal to what the other person spent on the clubs from the component builder. So money spent is about a wash and the guy who has component clubs gets to keep the old set.

to the OP, that being said - get what you like the best. Golf clubs are tools. They are not jewelry or watches. I respect the golfer who betters my score, not the golfer who betters my spending.

In my bag:

some golf clubs

a few golf balls

a bag of tee's some already broken the rest soon to be

a snickers wrapper (if you have seen me play, you would know you are not going anywhere for a while)

and an empty bottle of water

Well, the Wishon irons are not cheap! The ones that I liked are priced right there with a new set of Ping irons. Now with that in mind, they are custom length and weighted for me with Rifle shafts and vibration dampeners.

Just for an example of the quality:

1) I hit my Cleveland driver with a club head speed of 105 a certain distance.

2) I hit the club pro's Wishon driver with his shaft (not suited for my swing as it was shorter and not stiff enough) at a club head speed of 95 and only hit it 5 yards shorter. I could only imagine how I would have hit it with it custom built to my needs.

There is about a 200 dollar difference in getting my clubs retrofit to my specs and getting a new set built with my specs.

Hmmm...decisions, decisions!!

There is no doubt that Wishon clubs are very good. I wouldn't say name brand because they are not well known enough to be called one IMO.

Any club that is custom fit to your specs will perform better than one that's not. Try an OEM fit to your specs (same shaft, lenght, lie etc. as Wishon) and see if you can tell a difference. I don't really know what the results will be, but I'm thinking that it won't be much. Any of the components that I've worked with (not many, but some) have been top-notch and I'd expect the same from Wishon. And just a note: in regards to hitting a shorter, softer shaft...stiffer shafts generally do not go as far as softer flexes in most cases. You may find that it evens out with a stiffer, longer shaft.

I may just get mine retro fit but it will still be high. The shaft he had in his driver was a stiff shaft like mine, but the fitter said that it was the shaft that I would need.

I just have some thinking to do I guess. I may just have to get mine done a little at a time. It is going to be expensive either way.

      Day 38 (18 Dec 25) - got out in the backyard with grandson this afternoon.  We got into a little game of pitching the ball from about 25yds to a target point just off the asphalt lane behind the backyard.  Goal - just clear it with a quick hop and stop.  Focused on using the wedge swing motion I was talking with the course pro yesterday….smooth and thru just bruising the grass.  In addition to a concentrated focus on technique, it also called for a quiet mind locked in on target point.  Rehearsed this with both the 50° and 55° wedges.

      I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.

      I found it entertaining, but the announcing was lousy.  How did the measuring on the final shot start with Rory being closer and being told he won, and then with no explanation it turns out Scottie won?  Weird.

      Day 128 12-18 Worked on rotation and getting to lead side. Still working on the flow feeling while doing that. Recorded swings.

      IMO-the only thing entertaining was the relay race. Everything else was excruciatingly boring...or just  stupid, like the 14-club thing. Watching guys blade wedges into the water over and over is not at all interesting.
