I recently got fitted for my irons, the fitting told me I needed +1/2", 3 degrees upright. Having played a few rounds with the new clubs, I was impressed by my straighter ball flight so got to thinking that my wedges could probably do with the same treatment. My wedges were standard length and my tendency was to hit full shots thin. On a visit to golfsmith one of the guys there said they could extend the shaft and adjust the lie, for a pretty reasonable fee, think it was @$25 including regripping the club. I decided to get my wedges done and picked them up a week ago. I have noticed a big difference, I can count four birdies I've had this week directly as a result of great wedges shots in.

Anyway, I just wanted to say, that if anyone has fitted irons and is considering whether it's worth getting their wedges done as well, I'd say "do it, do it now!!"

Could part of the improvement be due to the new grips?

the old grips were about 9 months old, so they were in decent condition and certainly weren't slick. I personally believe the fact that the are the same leength and lie as my irons has given me more confidence on full shots with them.

I actually just got a brand new vokey 56 plugged 1" and it feels terrible. I had my previous wedge plugged 1/2" and got used to it and loved it, but wanted to stand a little straighter at address. Maybe its going to take some getting used to but the short chips around the green feel too long and loopy.. I don't have the touch... thinking about cutting it down 1/2".

did they bend your club head to 3 degrees on the vokey? I too need a 2 degree upright

Good post and I agree! I cut my wedges down for control and raised the lie's a bit.

I get my lofts and lies checked and adjusted every 6 rounds or so now. Sometimes more. It makes me happy and I know for a fact it is helping my game.

I also take note of any usual misses and adjust lie's accordingly. I play a natural 5 yard fade and if I start hitting an iron 10-15 yards either way I either know its time for an adjustment or a slight change.

I have my 52 wedge fitted, but I wasn't sure if I should get my 58 same specs as my irons (1/2 inch extended with 2 degrees upright) because I hit flop shots with it. I wasn't sure if the change in lie would make it more difficult.

Does anybody have an opinion on that?

I've been able to play my usual flop with the 60 deg after it was adjusted 2 deg upright, haven't noticed a difference.

On shorter chips around teh green I just choke down to the bottom of the grip to get the control I want.

I got it bent two degrees upright, with the extra length I was told it effectively plays 3 degrees upright.

    • Wow, a new season is upon us.  At this stage I have about 36 days of referee work scheduled, and I know I'll pick up a few more later in the season.  I have a couple of highlights, including two USGA qualifiers.  First is the US Senior Open at the Homestead, VA, second is for the US Senior Women's Open and Senior Amateur.  In just about two weeks I'll be co-chair for a college women's championship near Baltimore, a bit of a step up in responsibility.  The other highlight will be the Kenridge Invitational in Charlottesville, VA.  That one has had the same four officials for a few years, and I was specifically invited to take the spot of a retiring referee.  Apparently I'm doing something right. We had a difficult situation this past week at a junior event.  Two players approached me while walking off the 17th green.  They said they had noticed another player marking, lifting, and aligning his ball while it was on the fringe of the green, NOT on the green.  That's a 1-stroke penalty (Rule 9.4 for anyone who cares), and I told them to talk to the Player in order to make sure the score was recorded correctly.  Apparently that went fine, the Player realized he'd made a mistake, and accepted the Penalty gracefully.  His father, on the other hand, became irate, cursing at the two Players, cursing at the guy in charge of the competition, even cursing at the fathers of the two boys.  Not much anyone could to except to let him rant, but its sad to see.
