I all,
I don't know if this is just me, or if this is common thing, but every time I go to the driving range I start out ok, get better after about 10-20 balls when I'm loose and have my eye in, then it all goes to hell. I start shanking, then if I can fix that my rhythm gets thrown out. It normally takes me a couple of round after a driving range session to get back to where I started. I just try and practise my short game now, which really helps.
Its so annoying though, I have a lesson want to work on what I have been told and I just end up getting demoralised and give up.

I don't think yours is an uncommon problem. You get bored or you hit some really good shots and feel the pressure to keep hitting good shots, hit bad shots, get frustrated, then it all goes mental on you. I have had some sessions like that. Sometimes I am able to work something out and get it going again, other times I may as well have left the remaining balls on the range. I think sometimes after hitting ball after ball and making some bad hits we get the "range yips". (Is that a new term I made up?)I try to discover if there is something I am doing wrong in my swing that just doesn't hold up under pressure. I do that by doing slow motion swings and mirror work at home. I've discovered a lot of very subtle problems that way.

my wife gets the same way. I usually start out with my wedges and just go to every other club up the the driver. Then hit a few more wedges before leaving. Usually works out okay for keeping me intersested.

i find that i need to do my pre-shot routine on the range. if im just hitting balls i can tend to start just hitting them fast. and if i hit a bad one just grab another and hit it too, and then get into a streak of horrible shots. but if i keep a pace and rythm constant i dont fall apart like that as easily

When on the range it is common for people to 'loosen' up and then they start to sway and overswing. Make an effort to keep your setup consistent and remember your tempo...and always practice with a purpose.
hope that helps

try the following. Imagine playing your favorite courses when at the range. For example, there is a course in Dallas that starts off par 4 dog leg left, then par 5 with water on both sides. So after warming up and hitting a few irons, wedges, drivers, woods (now you have 3/4 of the bucket left. Act like you are on the first tee. Hit driver, then hit whatever club you imagine you have left to the green (say 8 iron). Then, move on to the imaginary par 5. Hit driver, 4 Hybrid, pitching wedge, what ever. Keep going through your imaginary round.

In fact, there was a muni in Dallas which was closed by the city for Trinity River flood plane. I have practiced imaginarily playing this course so many times, its as if the course still exists---but in my mind.

This keeps practice fun.

Then go work on your short game twice as long as you did on the full swing.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
