I would suggest you be a little more scientific about choosing between the GI or SGI irons. I recently was fitted at TaylorMade's performance labs, and one of things the fitter looked out was the consistency of my strikes in the center of the club. In my case I was pretty consistent hitting the middle in spite of all the other bizarre quirks of my swing, so I was able to go with more of a player's iron. I have a friend who appears to hit the ball very well, but is all over the face and if he didn't use SGI irons who knows where the ball would be going.

I'd recommend using some impact tape and hit a lot of shots with an SGI iron to see how consistent you are. If your pattern isn't fairly tight, don't torture yourself by getting something that you'll "grow into" as you improve. Get irons that match up with your game now and gives you more enjoyment - you'll be more incented to play more and improve.

Finally, don't just pick the clubs by how they feel in one session. Hit them a number of times, on different days. Some days I feel that every shot feels solid, and sometimes it feels like I just hit a rock with a piece of iron pipe - don't let that one bad day decide it for you.

Tonight I spent a few hours on the Golf Galaxy simulator trying out quite a few different clubs. Mostly just paying attention to the feel of the club and my trajectories and angles, I was able to narrow my choices down to the Ping G5/G10 and the Titleist AP1. It seemed I hit the AP1's a lil straighter and the trajectory angle was better than the Pings. However I kept goin back to the Pings because it felt better swinging the club. Upon narrowing it down to those 2, I talked to them about fitting. He noticed that I was making contact slightly on the toe on each shot, so he recommended a 1/2" extended shaft. He had one on hand, and wow, that 1/2" made a huge difference. With the impact tape on, I now was showing I was hitting the ball consistently in the sweet spot. Sure glad I took the time to get fitted :) One thing I may have to do, is get the club de-lofted about a degree. My launch angle on a 6-iron was averaging about 19 degrees and they are thinking I should try to get that a little lower.

Clubs I tried:
TM Burner
TM Burner Plus (didnt like the long shafts)
Ping G5
Ping G10
Callaway X22
Callaway Big Bertha (both Callaways felt like i was hitting rocks)
Titleist AP1
Nike Slingshot (surprisingly like them alot)
Mizuno MX-200 (wanted to like them, but just didn't)

I admire the way that you are approaching this.

You are remaining open-minded to all types/ brands and giving them a fair chance.

That is cool that you found out about the launch angle. I couldn't tell you launch angles from launch dangles....never recieved any feedback specifically about that.

Last fitting I had was for my driver and I just kept hitting until the gentleman said he thought we'd narrowed it down. He probably would have shared all the data with me had I asked.

You are going to get it narrowed down to "your" set real soon. Once you do you'll have confidence knowing that you tried 'em all and got the right one for you.

I'm quite sure I'll be placing an order for some custom G5's with AWT shafts. Quick question, if I choose to de-loft the clubs, does that still remain in the black dot category? Also, would I want to de-loft every club by a degree or just my long irons? I'm prolly only gonna order 5-PW with a couple wedges and a 4H. I really loved the Pings. Felt so great!

My next search will be for a 4H. I've hit the BB hybrid and G10 hybrid. Neither one i could hit for poop on the mats. Definately a club I'll need to practcie with.

    • Thanks but honestly… I don't know any other way. I don't mind being wrong so long as I know where to go from there. I don't like being wrong — I'd love to get things right (which is different than "being right"). I recommend grabbing a furniture slider or a paper plate or something, and doing something like this: First, make a swing where you let your trail foot swing out as you turn, then twist that foot back in. From DL and FO, it'll look like this: Then, during a regular backswing, try to twist your foot in slightly (demonstrated in the left image): You'll notice a crease along the trail side of your hip, your pelvis will "fold" into that thigh (internal rotation of the hip joint), and your "bits" will be squished a little between your pelvis and your thigh. Ben Hogan said once: "At the top of the back swing the groin muscle on the inside of your rt [sic] leg near your right nut will tighten," Hogan wrote. "This subtle feeling of tightness there tells you that you have made the correct move back from the ball." I don't know about that, but you will probably feel something down around that area.
    • Yep. I think it will start to feel even more athletic when we start on the downswing stuff later.  I know, it's just I want to be younger so I have more time to enjoy the changes. 🙂
    • I need to drop a couple of stone. 🙂 😛    Yep. Yeah, but in the end, it feels more athletic, like you're actually using your legs, yeah? As you know… we use the best available info we have. Like others, I was fooled a little by 2D images for awhile (moving or still). Unlike others, I've learned and grown and moved on since then, while they're still looking at their images (often from lousy camera angles).
