Lots of good information and opinions on this topic, but something not often talked about is how important it is to know how to reduce spin when you need to. Into the wind, hitting a ball hard but with a lower trajectory may not be the best answer. We all know a slower swing speed imparts less spin, so rather than hitting a lot of knock downs, consider clubbing down and using a solid 3/4 or even 1/2 swing. I'm not embarrassed to say I have hit a 7 iron from 100 yards in a raging wind... I might have hit a 6 if I thought the ball would stop where I wanted it. When the pressure is on and the wind is 30+, no one worries about the number on the club you hit if you can put the ball on the green and in good position. In high winds, I hit lots of knock downs, but I also hit more iron many times, and almost pitch the ball to the green, even over traps. In a true 2 or 3 club wind, sometimes a 4 club drop is an easier shot -- if you have practiced hitting them.

This may be the case for my round last Sunday. Some drives started very low but with the right amount of spin so they went hard under the wind. Others started a bit higher and with more spin so they ballooned horribly.

Yesterday I played 9 after work and though the wind wasn't as hard, it was still blowing. My only birdie of the day came on a par 5 which I used an 8 iron for 105 yards, basically a long pitch. Stopped just on the fringe and holed the chip. Definitely I have to play different shots for windy SFLA. I noticed I rarely use the full wedge towering high to the green.

    • Day 1 - First chipping and pitching. Focus on a better grip, the fundamentals and taking the club back on plane, not outside. Feels good. Then some full swings. Focus on improving the setup. Weight more forward, more bent over, and same grip stuff.
    • Congrats on the improvement. Cheers for lots of continued improvement in the future. IMO you've gotta get away from these spots… Those are partly "results" as the work will begin on things earlier in the swing. Good luck.
