Ok Everyone I am in the market for a new set of irons. I am looking to get some advice on them from experienced players. Here are some facts that may help:

-Handicap 12
-I am currently playing Taylor Made Rac irons from 6 years ago
-I demo'd a few sets, and i do not like the newer hybrid iron sets where they offer a hybrid for your 7i,6i,5i, etc.
-Still want a semi forgiving club
-Am going to get fitted by my club pro before i purchase
-I do not have a preference of manufacturer
-Hoping to get to a single digit handicap this season

Let the advice commence

thanks in advance,

jt

The answer is simple - hit a bunch of clubs in your skill range and go with what feels best. I'm in the same ballpark as you handicap wise and settled on the Taylor Made Tour Preferred irons this year - finally replacing my 10 year old Tommy Armour Ti face set.

Here is what I would try if I were you:

-TM Tour Preferred
-Titleist AP2
-Nike VR Split cavity
-Ping S57
-Cleveland CG7 tour
-Mizuno MP52

For me it came down to the AP2 and the Tour Preferred and really just ended up going with the Taylor Made's because I got a great deal on a new set off ebay. If you're going custom fit, though, you'll pretty much be paying full retail price unless your local pro orders them and gives you a discount.

I went with the Nike split cavity irons. Surprisingly forgiving, nice feel and look good too. All other irons listed above are good too.

The mizuno mp-52's and the titleist were the best ones I've hit, but they were way too expensive for my tastes.

I also liked the cleveland cg gold. If i'm ever to upgrade my irons itll probably be to cleveland.

Unless you're getting custom fitted, check reputable sellers on ebay. The TM Tour Preferred's I got retailed for $899 and I really like the Cleveland CG7 Tour for $599, but I ended up getting the Tour Preferred's new for $540 off ebay.

That, or befriend a local pro who can order things at "pro" price, which is usually about 40% off retail.

If I were you I'd go with a Game Improvement set. I got the "split-cavity" backs, and I really wish I got the more forgiving set.

Adams Idea Pro Gold Irons. You can order them without the hybrids, if you wish.

Bridgestone J36 or J33 CB irons. Very nice and smooth.

Cleveland CG7 Tour Irons. These irons are suprisingly smaller than most CB, very forgiving and with the stronger lofts the balls fly.

I just bought new irons. I tried the mp 52's and loved the look of them, but I found them difficult to hit. I also tried the AP 2's and found them easier to hit. I ended up buying the AP 1's. They just wowed me with their ease of consistent hits. You can get away with slightly off center hits and the shots just feel great off that club head.

I just bought new irons and I tested out the mp 52, AP1, and AP2. I went in thinking that I would buy the mp 52's since I had read so many reviews of their superiority. I tried them out and found that the look of the face at address was beautiful. However hitting them was a different story. They were not very forgiving on miss hits. Next I tried the AP2's and I liked the look and feel at impact. They are somewhat more forgiving then the mp 52. I ended up with the AP1's. They are very forgiving and gave me more consistent distance. I also love the feel at impact. These clubs just feel like butter.

    • Day 6: lighter session today after a long day. Just some mirror work and slow swings to try to get my feels down.
    • @Philip Belgium,  If I haven't already, Welcome to TST.  Your injury sounds serious and I hope you fully recover.   Thanks for sharing your story.  ..... each day get 1-2% better.   (A ray of sunshine and a positive outlook)
    • Day 91 (1  Aug 25) - Pre-tournament practice round today…had some great up and downs for par saves.  Rain came in this evening so it will be a totally different playing course tomorrow.
    • Jesus, when he keeps saying scissoring moment, ugh that is a horrible sounding phrase. Just makes me cringe. It doesn't help my mind went to Mr. Garrison from South Park. 🤣 If you know you know.  I think for the most part, golf shaft companies have gotten this figured out. They ask questions like, what tempo do you swing at. The whole scissor terminology sounds like they want to stand out a bit.  Yea, golfers load the golf shaft differently, and different bend profiles can help out. I do think swing speed matters as well. You probably want a golf shaft with lower torque if you swing faster.
    • Played 9 holes, shot a 39.  Kind of got around. Everything between the trees, so in play. Short game was rusty. Got to get back on that. Greens were stupidly slow because they got a lot of rain yesterday and probably couldn't cut them down. Usually in the summer they are firm and pretty fast for how sloped they are. Got to work on face to path a bit.
