I am in the hunt for new irons as of now. I am a 17ish hcp. but not because of my iron striking. I currently have a set of Tommy Armour 845 Oversized irons. My ball flight is a draw to a rather huge hook. I do have the regular flex shafts, and that paired with the offset on these irons im starting to wonder. I think my swing is fairly solid and my swing speed with a 3 iron is about 100ish, but if I do hit a bad shot it is usually fat or thin. I don't think I have ever hit a slice with an iron. I am currently looking at Titleist 735.CM and 775.CB. I have read the previous posts on both these irons and it really hasn't helped. I am working at a golf course and my be able to get the set at cost whatever that price may be. With both sets being progressive, the 6 irons that I will be demoing will both be fairly similar other than the offset. This is where I'm confused because the major difference is in the short irons.

Once I do decide which irons I get, how do I justify spending $80-120 on rifle shafts (either project x or regular) Everything seems so confusing with these irons.

Not to be long winded but I was wondering if I had to get these irons flattened or more upright, would there be a bend in the hosel or is it a not noticeable change. If I do get the 735's I would most likely get the satin stainless finish. I want my irons to look as nice as possible for as long as possible. I don't really care for the rub marks that chrome irons get on the face and the mild carbon seems to dent fairly easily from bag chatter. If anyone has these irons and is willing to give me any info on either club (even if I didn't ask about it), or even other suggestions I am open minded.

thanks in advance,
tburk

They're not really identical sets. The 735s are for better players. Even the short irons in the 775 set are cavity-back.

If you hit your irons well and play to a 17, I'd go for the 735s, personally.

Why do you need to spend more on rifle shafts? Especially since you can custom order the shafts at the time of purchase and really not pay any (or much) more?

You need to get fitted. Period.

well with the shaft cost, i was just going on the price on tgw.com and assumed that would be how much it is when i go through everything else. I was planning on getting fitted regardless, but i was wondering on the process of changing the lie if there is a bend/ crease in the shaft or if there are different heads or if they bend the hosel all the way down to where it meet the face. I saw pictures on ebay for a set of KZG i believe and the guy said that there was a bend mark on a few of the irons and i was wondering if that was normal

if you want to save some money - I've an offer for you. Currently I've on eBay set of the Taylor Made TP 2005. As a fellow TST member - I'll let you have it for $400 + shipping ($20?).

They bend at the hosel. They don't bend the shaft. There may be a small mark near the hosel that shows where it was clamped into the machine, but that's about all that should be there (and truth be told, even that shouldn't really be visible).

You need to get fitted. If your specs are within a certain range, you can pay to have clubs adjusted (without buying new shafts). Or, you're better off just ordering a custom set to begin with if you're outside of a small range near stock.

I am almost sure I am going to get 735.cm's as of now. There are a couple of different clubs available for me to try, but I really would like to get these irons. The only thing I still am up in the air about is whether to go Satin Stainless or Chrome 1025. I already said how I didn't really care for the wear marks on the face of the chrome sets ( I noticed them on the Nike Pro Combos I was looking at), but there was a guy somewhere that I read that the stainless could pit and get ugly. With spending this much money at my age (I am 17) I want to make sure these irons last through college and look nice without getting too beat up. I have noticed with sets of older 690cb or even 690mb on ebay that the bag chatter really gets the best of the mild carbon. Are these dents and dings as well as wear marks on the face mainly from repeated use ball after ball on the range? The reason I am so worried is because the 845s I have now aren't really too bad after 4 or 5 years of use except for the paint rubbing off in the cavity.

The Chrome definitely are head and shoulders above the satin when they come out of the box, but which are going to look better after a year or 2 or maybe even 4? I will get range privileges at my job so my irons could get a pretty serious beating which could bring the wear on the face as early as this season. Any experiences with Titleist irons that were made of mild carbon.

thanks

Hey I noticed you said you work at a golf course. If you do and your pro is cool about it check into getting your clubs PUD (personal use discount). Several of the club manufacturers do this and what it boils down to is non-professional golf course personel get to buy their clubs at less than cost. I know for a fact both Nike and Ping offer this because I have purchased a set from both using PUD. Nike offers cost -25% and Ping is like cost -40%. I also know for a fact that Titleist does not offer PUD so if you are sold on the 735's you'll have to pay cost. Its just a thought but if money is an issue at all it sure does save a lot.

I think bag chatter adds character. Doesn't affect the playing characteristics. I like my irons to look a little bit like they've been through war with me...

And chrome is the way to go.

wrong.... I get PUD on almost all my clubs... including my set of 735's.... I bought them for 500 bucks... 2-p I also bought my 905 with PUD and my Putter.... do I need to say more? Titleist does offer it period

With P.U.D I am willing to ask, but what if the people in the pro shop have never heard of it? The discount is not really offered to all employees, but I know the assistant pro pretty well. So if I decide I am going to ask about these irons, do I call Titleist if the pro shop never heard of it, or do I just let it go and pay the price originally stated? I am so glad you guys brought this up cause that would be awesome if I could get even more of a discount on these irons. (now I am starting to sound cheap) Pretty much to sum it up in one sentence, is P.U.D well known or is it a fairly well kept secret?

thanks for all the info

    • Interesting that no one is gaming the maxfli tour, whether the Tour, the S, or the X….it’s a quality urethane ball and a mid-level price sub $30 / dozen….and Maxfli Tour players out here….I will be playing it next summer as I just stocked up on them….4 dozen for $110 and Dicks has the occasional spend $100, get $20 off which drops it even lower…so far my preference is X just slightly ahead of Tour, and the S trailing pretty far behind…Like many of you, I have played many different balls over the years and trying to dial in a ball / price combo that works…so far the Maxfli Tour and Tour X are my front runners.     fyi, so far, dick’s is not paying me any promo / nil money, lol.   Happy New Year Y’all!
