I have recently began emphasizing a bit of right hand dominance on my backswing (I am a right handed player and up to now, my right hand has been pretty passive in both the back and through swing).

The first thing I have noticed is that my clubhead stays closer to the ground during the first foot or two of the backswing -- which I believe promotes a more shallow path back to the ball.

The result has been that I am hitting my Driver and long irons much more solidly (as a result of the shallow path), but my short irons have become erratic -- I seem to hit some fat, some thin. Up to this recent change, accuracy with my short irons was very much my strength.

Is the answer to the short irons as simple as taking the right hand out of the swing to promote a steeper angle into the ball? I have not had the opportunity to get back to the range and tinker since my weekend round where my short irons were erratic (to say the least) -- but damn, I don't think I have had a better ball striking day with 5 iron through Driver.

Based on my experience with my own golf swing is that I would first wonder if what you encountered 'stocks around'. If it does (and the improvement continues to show up only in the longer clubs) then I would consider that as a puzzle to be solved before I went to two very different swings between long clubs and short clubs.

All irons, long and short should be hit with the club leaning slightly forward at contact. If right hand action becomes too dominant near the contact point, you can lose his club position which will cause deterioration in consistent striking.

    • The hell is Thomas Fleetwood wearing? He looks like a divorced dad from 1998. Even the shoes are hideous
    • I was wondering this and haven't seen it on today's broadcast OR yesterday's, but apparently Cabrera did show up.  He currently has the third highest score for the week and is playing his last hole of this year's event.  I'm not particularly keen to see him, but I was wondering if he was present, and he seems to be.
    • Hatton hit 18 GIR.  That's incredible.   Rory's tee shot on #8 reminds me of a TV show, Get Smart, that I enjoyed watching as a kid.  The protagonist would often say "missed me by that much."  Rory missed avoiding the bunker by that much.
    • Rory is still going well! Pulling for him.
    • Day 556 - 2026-04-10 Played another 17 holes, this time skipping #11 to pass a group that was still on 14 when we were finishing up. 😛 Not as good as yesterday, but more distracted by the mind's eye.
