I have never joined a golf league but the idea sounds appealing. I have a few questions though:

Do they run at times where you can make it after work or on the weekends? Do most courses have leagues? Do they advertise or do you have to contact the course to get information?

Thanks

Most of the time you need to contact the course, although I have seen notices of leagues starting in the local paper before. Most courses have them because they say it's what keeps them in business. Some higher end courses don't but most municiple and general public courses do. Just contact a couple of your local courses you like and ask about them. They usually start up about this time of year (beginning to middle or April). As for the times, it really depends. They are usually weekdays, but some also operate on weekends. Some go off as early as 4:00 and others may be much closer to 6:00 (or even later in some cases). It also depends on how many people play, obviously. The leagues I have played in have been smaller (4-5 groups), but I played one time in a league for work a couple years ago that had about 60 people in it and it was a mess (the next year the course said no more than 10 foursomes for league play). Depending on how well the league is run and what the rules are it can be a lot of fun, but I don't like when they have crazy rules that take away from just straight golf.

Are they nine hole? Even getting off at 4:00 would be pushing it for 18.

Thanks for your help

All of the leagues I have ever seen are only 9 holes.

I'll use my weekday league for example. 49 of us have the tee from 4:45-5:45, it's a 9 hole league. One week, we'll play the front 9, the next week we'll switch and play the back 9. There is another league at the same time that does the opposite. What many of us do is get to the course around 2:30 and play "the other side". I'm not a fan of 9 hole rounds. There are morning leagues, afternoon leagues and weekend leagues. Also there are men, womens and mixed leagues. Around here, most if not all of the courses have some sort of league. Call a course you like and ask if any of men leagues have an opening on XXXXX afternoon. They can give you the contact information of the leagues' officer who handles new guys. Don't be shy. We get new guys every year, most come in through members, but a few are just looking for a game. Since most leagues are handicapped, all players are welcome.

Of the leagues that I have played in there are always options (although almost all of the ones around here are 9 hole leagues, and all are on weeknights). I played in a Thursday night league 2 years ago that had 3 divisions (1pm-2:30pm, 2:30pm-4pm, 4pm-6pm). The division that you played in was what you selected on the sign up sheet, the time that you are most likely to start the majority of your matches. This way it puts you at times that the rest of the people in the division can be there.

The one that I play in now is a 9 hole league that has 2 divisions. We have the tees from 4pm-5pm, and can fill in after that wherever there is room to fit a later match in. If you need to play later or can fit it in earlier, you just contact the other team and try to schedule it.

It is great though, to play in a league. I have made lots of good golf buddies from the league and can regularly put a foursome together for a weekend round on the putting green before a league round.

Also, beyond the normal leagues are local amateur 'tours'. I don't know if you them in your area, but in Cincinnati area there are at least 3 and they play 18 holes on the weekends (most of the time) and sometimes have special events. One of the 'amateur tours' locally does Ryder Cup style competitions, 2 day events, road trips, etc. These events are usually handicapped. I have played a couple times and had a good time. The Golf Channel runs some of these in different area so they may have one in your area ( http://www.thegolfchannel.com/amateurtour/ ). If not them, then check out bulletin boards at local courses/golf retailers to see what is in your area. It's a great way to meet lots of other golfers and play really good courses, often at a discount.

I know that's not real helpful, but your questions are pretty general.

Ask at your preferred course. Ours in nine. Ours has a small league fee ($30 for the season) and each league day it's $5 dues plus $1 for the skins game. You also have to pay greens fees if you're not a member.

    • Day 23: weird day, and only had a little bit of time. Just did mirror work again, working on where the elbow is in the downswing
    • I flipped over to this tonight and thoroughly enjoyed it. Anyone else watch? I picked it up during the golf relay event, but seeing these pros out having fun in alternative events was refreshing and entertaining. I’m sure it will be on in reruns in the next week or so, so I won’t spoil the outcome. Im curious what others thought of it. I’m recording it’s later airing to see the beginning.
    • Day 443 - 2025-12-17 Made a few swings in testing some things out at another academy. Might pop up on someone else's podcast in a few weeks.
    • Day 37 (17 Dec 25) - nine hole round with my good friend.  We got paired up with a couple of the men’s group regulars as part of their shootout.  Started off with a wonderful quad bogie and then a dbl on three to be six over thru three holes.  Game went 180° over the next five as I shot one under (including a chip in birdie on hole six and four up and down 1 putt pars) for a net finish of five over. What could have been a really tough nine became a solid finish due to staying in the moment and not checking out.  Great day in course management and keeping perspective .
    • Day 127 12-17 Backswing and flow practice. Took advantage of the 60 degeee weather(it was 20 degrees Sunday)
