Hello All,
I’m just wondering people views on which type of face is best for distance control (milled, insert, grooved, etc). I currently have an Odyssey White Hot #2 CS, which I love from 5 metres in, but when I start to have to judge to the distance more on longer putts I really struggle. I think this may also be due to me have a long slow putter stoke, which I struggle to accelerate for the longer putts. I’m thinking that maybe a milled putter would suit me better as the ball comes off a bit faster (that’s what I’ve been lead to believe), but in general what do people recon is better for judging lag putts.

P.S. I really want to get a Mizuno Bettinardi C-05 as they look awesome.

I have an Odyssey DFX 6600 and even though it is a few years old I have not found a putter to take it out of my hands and I have had my share from White Hots to Scotty Camerons to Yes. The SC's are very well balanced but I was not good on with it on shorter putts, but longer puts I had a very good lag distance and feel. The White Hot XG was just the opposite, Money on short puts <10 feet, but longer puts the distance was terrible. My DFX is the best of both worlds, I am confident over any putt within 10 feet and longer putts I am confident I can lag to within gimme range. The DFX putter are probably hard to come by but the new Odyssey Tour putters and the Black i series are about the same feel as my DFX.

In regards to the Mizuno Bettinardi C-05, I recommend you have a look at the Odyssey White Hot Tour #9. It is the same shape/design as the C-05 and has a much firmer insert than the White Hot series, plus it's cheaper ($149 at Dicks right now).

I personally don't believe the equipment makes a difference with distance control.

I believe that some people putt better with one putter over others because of how it may set up for your putting style or your visual confidence but not so much for distance control.

In my humble opinion I feel that it's your putting mechanics that is at fault and not the material of the putter.

Everyone has their own face preference....mine is solid.....no insert.

You can experiment with different ball types to get the results you are looking for.

I think the ball has just as much a part in distance control as the face composition.

For distance control, the only important consideration for me in a putter is that the ball's reaction off the face be consistent . Lively or soft doesn't matter as long as it's the same every time.

I have the Mizuno Putter you are referring too. I got it last year and I love it. I got it for 50 dollars new. It feels as good as a Scotty and I am putting better than ever.
