Im thinking about starting from scratch!! I just purchased the Nike sumo2 driver and love it, and am contiplating getting the complete hybrid set down to the sasquatch bag (for some reason i like everything to match). I am currently hitting x-12's and want some new irons to improve my game. I know I should probably spend the money on lessons, but i am a huge impulse shopper and it would be so much more fun to get myself an early christmas present. I typically shoot in the 90's and would like to see my game in the 80's consistantly. Is this a rediculous idea? Should I choose other SGI irons? Pleasee help!!!!!!

Any feed back will be greatly appreciated!!!!
Thanks in advance!!

Spend the money on lessons...lol. That rush you get from new clubs will soon fade if youre choppin the ball all around the links.

Christmas? It's April. A few months ago in golf digest i think Paul Goydos said "A 30 handicapper shouldn't go out and buy $1000.00 clubs. They should buy $200.00 clubs and buy $800.00 worth of lessons."

wheres the fun in that?? LOL not what I wanted to hear!

Shooting in the 90s is hardly, "chopping it around the links". Lessons would help, but you also may benefit from switching to a hybrid iron set because of how stupid easy hybrids are to hit.
At the very least, you should test hit the irons you are thinking about getting before you spend the money.

I hear they make hydrogen charged drivers, now..

But i think you would have more fun hitting clean shots with lesser equipment than mediocre or bad shots with good equipment. Lessons can go a long way if youre willing to learn and pay attention.

Do your part to help the economy and buy new clubs.

If you ever want to get your golf scores to the mid 80s on a consistent basis you are going to need lessons, either from a professional golf teacher or at least from somebody who knows what they are talking about and who can watch you play and analysis your game.

Look, new clubs look great. I love new clubs. I'm the proud father of ten

clubs that will be a year old next week. But, if you want your user name to be ironic instead of a description of your game, you should strongly consider the lessons. Plus... when you get good, you have an excuse to go buy a nice set of irons. Maybe some Nike VR Split Cavity to go with the driver? Just gotta earn it through a few months of lessons and lots of practice time...

Check your PM's man, lol. We apparently live in the same city, and I'm always looking for new people to play some golf with.

Since the overwellming majority of you suggested lessons vs new sticks, I decided to sleep on it. However, the urge is very much still there!! . After work I am headed to Golf Galaxy with the intent of purchasing a new bag ONLY. I think I am going to only bring $200 cash with me, and leave all the credit/debit cards at home, to prevent any impulse buying!!! As for the lessons, is Golf Galaxy a good idea? Or would I be better off going to a local pro at my home course??

Well i did it. Went to get a new bag, picked up the Nike Sumo's, hit them and fell in love with them. Needless to say, i am now the proud owner of my very first brand new set of irons. Picked up the bag and 3Hybrid-Awedge for $540. Going to pick up the Nike sumo2 3wood tonight, to complete my set!!! Dont worry, I still have a few hundred dollars left in my budget for lessons!

I bought my first new set of irons this year as well, and I love the confidence they instilled in my swing.

I was playing with an old (20+ years) set of cheap a$$ dunplop clubs. Shot best of 104 last year.

This year got serious about golf and picked up a new set of TM r7 irons and r5 Driver(used). Shot a 100 first full 18 out this season and shot a 91 last Monday. I've improved alot through practice all winter, but the clubs for me made me "feel" stronger and more consistent.

Besides it's fun buying new toys, isn't it?

I have yet to take any lessons, but might do so later this year, depending on how I continue to play

Irons: TM r7 Irons 4-AW Regular

its my experience that new clubs will only help you consistently shoot on the lower side of your range...meaning if you are usually playing 95-100, new irons will help you keep it closer to 95 rather than 100. the notable exceptions of course are if you were originally playing complete trash (duct tape holding together vital components) or you were playing tour caliber muscle backs. considering you were playing x-12's before i would get discouraged if you don't shoot 80 the next time you go out. you really gotta take some lessons or at least make friend with people who are solid golfers who can give you some pointers. i really hoped you tried more than one set of irons before you decided to purchase your set too...it worries me when people would rather having matching clubs than the best suited clubs. its like when i go snowboarding and see some guy with all shaun white gear from his clothes to his board and bindings, but can't get off the lift without falling.

anyways...congrats on the new sticks, hopefully you hit them well

Personally I tried quite a few sets of irons before finally settling on my R7s. And that was over a few weeks of visits to the different golf shops.

In the end I was hitting the Nike SlingShots 4D about the same as the r7s, but simply prefered the feel of the R7s more.

My driver I was lucky to get to try out for 1 hour at the local indoor dome before purchasing it from there pro shop. Was able to compare back to back with some friends drivers and my Callaway Big Bertha Warbird.

So I second the opinion to try out various clubs before buying...it puts everything in perspective for making a better decision.
