Swing plane

Forgive me if this has been asked before, I am new to the forum. If there is a link to my question, just paste it and delete the thread.

I am newer to the game in the sense that now I am taking it seriously. I played baseball for 20 years, so I am adapting quickly to hitting correct shots and practicing as much as I can. One thing that is killing me is my driver. I always seem to slice it or fade. My 3-wood however is a different story. I hit it straight almost every time I swing it, or I have a tiny fade to it, but it is always playable. Distance is consistent 220-240. Shouldnt the swing planes be the same between the two?

did you get club fitted? what flex are your shafts for your driver and 3 wood?

shaft on driver is Aldila NV 65 .350 Stiff flex
shaft on 3-wood is Aldila NV-H 70 Regular flex

I literally just got the stiff shaft put on the other day. I went to the range and I hit it well, but I definitely will slice my share of balls.

I figured it had something to so with the loft. how about shaft length? would that make any difference?

The longer the club the more flat the swing plane will tend to be.

What you might also find is that as soon as you get the driver in hand you want to smash the cover off it and your swing can get all out of sync. A good drill at the range is to hit a few 7 or 8 irons and then try to apply the same swing to the driver.
Your swing will be a bit smoother and hopefully get better results.

This could be just me, but that doesn't necessarily work because of the different planes the Driver and the 7/8 iron do.

Yes they should be the same but shorter because the club is shorter. I think you hit the 3 wood better because it has much more loft and the driver is not as forgiven. What is the loft on your driver? if you are new I would suggest around 11 degrees. IMO

The planes between the two are almost the same (3 wood and driver) but I disagree with the plane of a 7I and driver being the same. The length dicates a much more upright swing with irons as well as the need to hit down on the ball.

I think you are swinging too hard with the driver and your hips are winning the race and leaving the club face open.

i have a similar set up.
my irons are uniflex steel
3 wood is a regular graphite
and driver is stiff graphite.

i was at the range and i noticed, my swing with 3wood has to be slower than my driver. if i try to hit my 3 wood with the same swing as my driver, i lose a lot of accuracy. I feel that its cause of the different flexes between the 2 clubs.
so when i swing my 3 wood, my tempo is a bit slower but i can crush the ball accurately.

ex:
if my driver(stiff) swing from the start of back swing to impact takes 2 secs.
then my 3wood(regular) swing would be est. 2.5-3 secs
