Anyone carry a 1 hybrid in place of a 3 wood?

My 3 wood is causing me fits. fighting the left with what would otherwise be a fairly straight swing, and any attempt at a draw just is over cooked with what feel like good swings, so i am thinking of moving to a 1 hybrid. Not to worried about distance loss, AKA 3 wood is 14.5, hybrid will be 16. shaft difference as well, but more over, it seems the hybrid is just a bit more controllable.. anyone game this set up? i figure with this i could put the 2 i back in or put the gap wedge in.

As is now, i dont really hit my 20 degree adams, so its not doing anything, and the 3 wood has no confidence, so its only out for going to par 5's in two, so something has to change!

Anyone carry a 1 hybrid in place of a 3 wood?

I replaced all my fairway woods with hybrids a couple of years ago, including substituting a 16 degree hybrid for my 15 degree 3 wood. I figured that I would gain consistency at the expense of only a little distance. I was right. That set up worked for me.

This year, I demoed a Callaway Diablo 3 wood. With a loft of 16 degrees, it was as easy to hit as my hybrid. Because it had a longer shaft, I hit it somewhat further than my shorter shafted hybrid. Bingo! A 3 wood went back into my bag. The equipment choices today available to the amateur are staggering. I would say you could certainly choose a 16 or even 15 degree hybrid appropriate to your skill level. Or, you may wish to look at a 16 degree 3 wood like the Diablo. Or, you may wish to look at the wood like hybrids. Or....I'm starting to confuse myself. Good luck.

I too changed from a 15* 3-wood to a 16* 1-hybrid. Mostly psychological, I was not hitting my 3-wood for diddley. The difference of a few inches in shaft length and the smaller head just helped me swing smoother and more in control; for whatever reasons. Golf is a weird game filled with eighty million swing thoughts at one time. Setting the 3-wood aside and building my 1-hybrid has eliminated a few of those negative swing thoughts!! Again, to each his/her own, but since changing to a 1-hybrid, I'm more confident.

Perhaps too ... a few more buckets on the range would help!! HAHAHA Enjoy!

I've thought about it, but can't quite go there. I carry a 16 degree 2-hybrid, and and my 3-wood has also been irritating me (my pattern is great shot, top, great shot, top, etc), so I just put the same Aldila DVS shaft in it that is in my hybrid (70 gram instead of 85), cut it down to 42.25" and added weight in the head to keep it between D2-D3. Just got it back from the pro shop today and am waiting for the weekend.

Please do let me know how that works out..i am going through th same ordeal.. one fantastic shot that makes me want to keep the thing forever, followed by one that sends it a bit hapharzardly into the bag.

I figure with the addition of the one hybrid, i could add a gap wedge, or i could pull the shaft and put a titty head back in the bag as the 905R just came back with my whiteboard :D

Got off early and played a quick 18 holes solo this afternoon. Pretty much had the course to myself, though I caught a foursome on 16. Absolutely crushed my newly shortened 3-wood. It's now 42.25" long, 13°, with a regular Aldila DVS 70 in it, and I hit every fairway (to be absolutely truthful, I was in the primary cut on two holes), and was out there at least 220-230 yards every time, and pegged a couple 250-ish. I also hit it off the fairway about 230 with no trouble, so I was close on the long par 4 (460, hit the greenside bunker) and wedged up to the last par 5 (560). I think I hit it 25 times this round, and love it. I played two balls from the fairway and hit my (newly shortened) 4 wood as well, and that thing is a wonder as well. Couldn't putt today to save my life (37 putts), but shot 86, didn't lose any balls, wasn't in the trees at all, and was relaxed over my shot, since I knew I was about to smack a little baby fade out there 230 every time I picked up the club. Amazing how much easier it is to play when you're comfortable with the club in your hand and not wondering where the ball might be going. It's mind-boggling that the equipment companies sell these long-ass clubs that virtually no one hits consistently, and that the pros won't touch.

    • Ok, I'm trying to find a feel to hit a consistent ball flight (irons).  My current predicament.  1. I try to do the arms down stuff better, with the club feeling like it is way behind me more. It's just a cluster of results. Most of the time, I can't get any speed on the swing. If I get my arms down faster, I just throw them out.  2. I focus all my attention on turning better. Pushing off with my left leg and getting my right side through better. On the DTL view, this doesn't produce anywhere close where the hands and club should be. The result is usually ball first contact, lower ball flight, more centered contact.  At this point, I am going with option 2. Stop thinking about what the hands do. Just make a shorter backswing, keep it wide, turn through. Somehow, the club head finds the ball. My focus is so much on just making sure I turn, it's like, "Oh, that contact was better.... Oh, that bell flight looks playable." If not, I will just be practicing my entire summer.
    • Nope, they spent too much money. They are in over 28 million on the football roster and related NIL compensation at this point. Boosters associated with any Texas college football team has HUGE sway. The AD is between a rock and a hard place. They put a lot of money into Sorsby, at the chance of winning a NC this year. If you move on, you basically wasted a lot.  This is why Ohio State wants 3 QB's they feel can start. That is why the backups the past 5 years at some point transfer. Texas Tech has no backup near the quality of Sorsby. If they move on, they are screwed for 2026.
    • Maybe there's something I still don't understand about the situation. Wouldn't Texas Tech do itself a favor to move on from Sorsby at this point?
    • Day 281 6-10 Full swing, fast, getting low point ahead of "towel".  Working on flow during this seems to help.
