Is this typical consistency?

I keep a handicap using a spreadsheet and these are my last 20 rounds. Is this "normal" type consistency? I feel like I have some pretty wild swings in my scores. High to low is a 23 stroke difference, and they were only 2 rounds apart! My current index is 18.1. I won't bore yall with the course ratings but average is probably a 70.5/122 or something like that.

I also chart the data and it shows a steady improvement over the last 1.5 years that I have data for, from an average score of 105 to a 93, using a linear fit. I feel like I'm getting better and I think that is good progress in 18 months. But there is so much "noise" in the data and I just am wondering if that is pretty normal for other folks around my handicap level.

And, yes, I am an engineer.

I think that is pretty normal. Not that it makes you feel better. I love that you are an engineer. I am in my senior year and yes I have a spreadsheet too. My scores were all over the place. At least you have a negetive slope on you graph (meaning you are improving). My last year spread sheet ended with a positive slope. At the end of the year I start trying to hard.

To give you a comparison. My R value on my linear fit is R^2 = 0.0442. So I was all over. Just for kicks my line is y = 0.0749x + 13.952. This year I am wrote a MATLAB program to do my data analysis.

Looks pretty consistent with my scores actually.

I shot a 92 first round of the year. Shot a 108 a few rounds later, and a 91 today.

In the Ogio Kingpin bag:

Titleist 913 D2 9.5* w/ UST Mamiya ATTAS 3 80 w/ Harrison Shotmaker & Billy Bobs afternarket Hosel Adaptor (get this if you don't have it for your 913)
Wilson Staff Ci-11 4-GW (4I is out of the bag for a hybrid, PW and up were replaced by Edel Wedges)

Cobra Baffler T-Rail 3 & 4 Hybrids

My scoring range this year is 66 to 85 - although the 85 was before I mdde a change in my weight distribution at address that has really worked out well - last 5 have been 74, 81, 75, 66, 74.

I know I am more inconsistent than almost anyone I play with. I one had cosecutive rounds a week apart at the same course where I shot an 83 followed by a 110. My last 20 are:
104
110
86

88

So while you may be inconsistent, there are people more inconstant than you. I am looking forward to seeing other people response to this.

your average swing band is about 2-3 rounds. You seem to shoot pretty low immediately following a bad round so you might want to analyze that. Perhaps it has something to do with your mental game. What it means exactly is anybody's guesses. You might want to revisit those rounds and try to remember what you were thinking/feeling back then and see if there's any correlation.

I noticed the same thing, I think what happens is I get mad that I played so bad and hit the range 2 or 3 times before I play again... so I guess I know how I got those good scores (practice a lot).

My equation is y = -0.0192x + 861.6. Mine plots total score (not including ESC) against date. I use ESC in the handicap calculation but when I plot stuff I want to see how I actually played. We don't have an off season here so I've just been using the same sheet since the first entry, which was 8/1/2007. I've played 59 times since then; would have like to have played more but just don't have the time.

Good to hear that you wrote a Matlab script to do this - those skills will come in useful when you graduate and get a job - my first job I used it all the time doing inertial navigation stuff. If you are a Matlab guru there will always be work for you.

You guys are lucky. I don't think that I have played 20 rounds total in the last 2-3 years.

To the OP, your scores look to be fine. There is some improvement there. Like others have said, everyone has the good and bad days. You just have to shake it off and do better next time. Practice the short game. You will see your scores go down quickly if you can get up-and-down more and eliminate the three putts.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

That seems very typical. I know mine is the same way. I am right now a 9.3 and was an 8 two revisions ago.

My low score of my last 20 is a 78 and my high is a 92.

I am really lost right now. I think some instruction is needed.

    • Rory and Bryson are two of my favorites for some time.  This was a great watch.  Poor Rory looked gutted and (heat?) exhausted at the end there.  Bryson play US Open golf - Captain Scramble.  Avoid the blowups and accidentally find a birdie on occasion and it goes far,
    • 2nd shot into a short par 5. I had ~185 left but was just off the fairway to the right with some low tree limbs in front of me. Aimed at the water and hit a punch slice 4 iron that started low under the trees, rose higher as it kept going, cut towards the middle of the green, carried the water and rolled to ~25 feet for an eagle putt. Lipped out the eagle putt but never going to complain about tap in birdies.  It was one of those shots that I've done before and was a perfect yardage gap. I have a punch 4 iron swing that I know goes right at 185, and I can cut the ball much easier than I can draw it, so it was actually a much easier shot for me than it appears to be in the picture. I would have been fine if it would have over cut too, rough isn't very penal here so it would have been an easy chip from short right.  Although to be fair I didn't realize/remember that the water cut in as far into the fairway as it did, I thought it stopped right around the left edge of the green.
    • I absolutely LOVE my new Titliest U505 3 iron.  It was slightly chunky looking at first, but I don't even notice it anymore after just a couple rounds with it. It's super easy to launch it high and I have no issues flighting it down either.  Perfectly fine to hit off the tee for tighter tee shots and for 2nd shots into par 5s. Even the mishits go much further than I think they should, it's quite forgiving.
    • Obviously I'm not you and you have a far more mature swing than mine, but swing length is an issue for me as well if you see my swing thread. What I'm finding is more the difference between arm plane (vertical) and shoulder plane (flat), more the arm runs off (length) uncontrolled. It could be coincidence.
