I wasn't sure if this was the best place to put this, but I couldn't really figure out any other forum to put it in.

Does anybody have any suggestions on places to play in or near Atlanta? I'm going to be traveling there in the next few weeks and want to play a few times while I'm there.

Thanks in advance.

It really depends on what part of Atlanta you'll be staying in and what your price range is. Give me an idea of area your going to be in and a price range and I'll give you some idea's.

I THINK I'm going to be in the Dahlonega area. I'm going to stay with a friend of mine who is working there for the summer. As far as price range goes, I don't have too many restrictions, but I don't want to spend ridiculous amounts everyday if that makes any sense. I'm a student, so I just don't have unlimited funds at the moment.

Achasta Golf Club, formerly known as Birch River, is a Jack Nicklaus-designed course situated in a valley just south of Dahlonega. The club recently went through a change in management, so I'm not completely sure of its rates and visitor policies. You'll have to contact them to find out.

There are two good city-owned courses in Gainesville. Chattahoochee Golf Course is a once-private course that was renovated a couple of years ago. Chicopee Woods has 27 holes routed through a nature preserve. Since you aren't a Hall County resident, you can expect to pay a little more than the locals at these two courses.

Hampton Golf Village is just off of Georgia 400 north of Cumming. It's an average course with a lot of forced carries and some ridiculous holes running up and down a mountain on the front nine, but it is very easy to get to and not as expensive as a lot of other courses in the area.

Woodmont Golf Club in Canton is probably my favorite course in the the northern exurbs of Atlanta. There are no vertigo-inducing elevation changes, nor holes surrounded by McMansions on both sides, which is rare for residential courses in the area. It's just a great course that doesn't throw any dirty tricks at you.

Go south to Stockbridge and play Georgia National. Very nice layout, bend grass greens.

I'm not familiar with any courses near Dahlonega, but all of the golf worth playing in Atlanta is private (East Lake, AAC, Golf Club of Georgia, etc.) The Georgia National in McDonough is okay, but it's not really worth the trip from Dahlonega. Stick to courses up there; nothing worth the drive in Atlanta.

If this is a dedicated golf trip, make the drive down to Callaway Gardens. It's an hour and a half south of Atlanta, but worth the time and money.

I threw my clubs into the lake so it's time to start over...

Go north, young man. From Dahlonega, it's only about 45 minutes up to Brasstown Valley in Young Harris. One of the best courses in GA.

Just make sure you don't give yourself vertigo on the drive up there!
