I've been playing for a couple of years now, but I'm more of a social player.. I have some friends that play a lot and I just go with them once or twice a month. I've never owned my own clubs, and I'm getting tired of borrowing someones every time I want to play.

The only thing is that I don't want to spend a lot since I know I don't take golf seriously, and just want to play for fun every now and then with some decent clubs.

I found a nice taylormade bag online for $50 which I'll probably buy, and I already have a driver (nothing great). I planned on buying a nice putter for around $80-100, and just want a set of irons. I've only played with steel irons, so I figured I'll just stick with that unless there's a reason I should get graphite.

No idea if I need stiff or regular flex, but I assume I can go to dicks/golf galaxy and talk with someone there to determine that. Are there any irons that you guys would recommend? I would like to spend under $300.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Are any of these good?

I'd say look into getting some used clubs. You can find a decent set of irons for $100-150.

Adams Golf was, for a while, considered one of the best irons for the not-very-serious (or just not very good ;) ) player. They've since gained a reputation as pretty good all-around. In any case, the A2 will serve you very well - you'll want to figure out whether to get regular or stiff flex in some way. There's a rule of thumb based on how far you typically hit a 7-iron, but it isn't the best way to determine it. The fact that the irons are hybrids 3,4 and have varying levels of forgiveness will work well. If you're generally very athletic, there's a good chance you'll want stiff, and if you aren't very athletic, there's a good chance you'll end up with regular. But then there are some people who aren't very athletic who are just naturally flexible for some reason, and end up needing stiff. And then there are body builders who can't generate the speed necessary for stiff and should be on regular. I would suggest checking with a golf shop for the stiff vs regular issue, but I would refrain from paying for such a fitting at the moment. If your friends are more serious golfers, they might have a good idea which will work better for you, too. The Cleveland HiBores... are pretty much hybrids down to the pitching wedge. Unless you love hitting hybrids or woods, I would suggest against it.

My friend is similar to you, just needed to pick up a decent set, and got the Maxfli Crossbax iron set from Golf Galaxy. It's $199, comes with a 3 and 4 hybrid, regular or stiff flex, easy to hit, high flight and plenty of distance. I play Ping Zing 2's or Macgregor MT Pro Blades, but I've hit his irons a few times and they feel great. Really good deal-and there are a number of nice matching Maxfli putters that only run $30-$40.

Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestions so far everyone.

A friend of mine has a similar set of adams clubs and loves them, so I might look into those further.

I hit a ping rapture 7 iron today at golf galaxy in their driving range simulator, and it felt nice.. but I know these are much more expensive than what I'm looking for. Maybe they have one of these A2's there to demo before I buy it. I'll have to go back tomorrow or next weekend.

Hireko Golf www.hirekogolf.com do yourself a huge favor and check out the acer xk line or irons...based on your description that you posted most likely the High Trajectory version but the regular version may suit your game too...the regular xk's compare very well to clubs like the x-20's while the high trajectory irons have wider soles and thicker toplines which compare more to clubs like the big bertha's and even the raptures. The xk line was featured in the 09 hotlist in the budget guide and many members on these boards have said good things about the acer line.

if you really like the raptures look into gigagolf c9...don't know much about those particular clubs but gigagolf has some nice products and a good reputation.

in my bag:

Driver: '08 Cobra F Speed LD 10.5 w/UST Proforce V2 Tour Flight stiff

Fairway: Adams Speedline Fast10 3-wood w/Aldila Wasabi stiff
Hybrid: Nickent 3dx 3H
Irons: Nike CCI forged 4-pw Wedges: Nike Victory Red 52 56 60 Putter: Rife Mr. Beasley Balls: Bridgestone B330-RX Tees: epoch

I'd suggest looking into some GI irons. They're easier to hit, and you could probably get a decent set off eBay easily within your price range. There are also a number of reputable companies whose irons can sell fairly cheap off eBay.

How do the Acer XK's compare to the Adams A2's? Looks about the same price for the set.

    • Down the line and face on from today. Still feeling like I’m sticking the club into a hole in the ceiling above my right shoulder and then big loop inside to start downswing. That’s how it feels. Not how it looks though! Gotta keep working on this for a bit but I see a lot of progress. 😁
    • Day 5 (13 Mar 26) - Friday shootout cancelled- made it a practice round working from mixed tees. Plenty of up and down work around greens.  Best was a hole out birdie on the par 3 #5 hole - nice pitch and roll w/Pw from about 10yds off the green - dead center flagstick drop.  Much of round was focused on getting solid weight shift into lead foot.
    • Day 208 3-13 Worked on wrist arching and flow. First time hitting reall balls at a range in months. It was nice to see ball flight. Still not sure it beats my backyard practice station.
    • Three hole match - microphones on in the cart. It's fascinating listening to them talk about their shots and how they play them. I'm not normally a huge fan of the TM videos - they seem forced to me - but this one doesn't. It's also fun seeing their competitiveness over what on the face of it is a fairly meaningless 3 holes, but they can't help themselves.
