I'm at a technological crossroads.

I've been well served by my current low-tech cell phone which gets used for just the basics(talk, v-mail and texting). I seldom used any other enhanced feature on it.

I really want an ipod. It will consolidate all my cds adn DVDs into a handy format.

I can't decide whether or not I want to spend the extra money and get an iPhone.....the monthly cell phone bill would be a good bit more than I'm currently paying.

Also....at 16G...I wonder how soon I'll fill it up. Still the apps are really awesome....cool new stuff is coming out every day for them.

I would definitely go with the ipod classic. It has plenty of room for all of your media, however it is due for an update so it may serve you to wait a few weeks and see what happens.

I noticed they are selling the Classics at a discount.....guess this should have been my clue that new stuff was coming.

Either way I go it will be so handy. I want to get a couple of the speaker docking station and clock radios for the house, too.

I've also got to get some adapters for car use.

Any other iPod related recomendations from anyone????

I have about 25 GB of music. It's rare I'd ever want ALL of it with me at all times. I have an iPod permanently hooked up in the car and it doesn't even hold all of my music, though it has the capacity to do so.

The data app surcharge isn't bad if you find yourself using data frequently. I know I do. But we also get a discount, too, and have three lines with two iPhones and we pay under $100/month.

I have botha 30 gig video and a Ipod touch 8 gig...

The 30 generally stays in the car for listening purposes, has all the music i ever want and more and i still have a ton of room on it..

the touch is actually mainly for app and gaming purposes.. Its nice to hook on to wifi and be able to do computer stuff when say your laptop or computer is being used. The apps dont take up much space at all, i have 5 pages i believe and still plenty of room, and its only an 8! my friend has a 32 with tons of movies, games, and music and has no worries about space issues.

you could always get the touch.. i love mine, all the fun of an iphone, minus the camera and i phone! My cell phone (dare) does everything i would need it too, no need to get a fancy version of it just for something an ipod touch could easily do.

I dont know what kind of vehicle you drive but if your car has an auxiliary input then i would definitely go that route, seeing as fm transmitters are hit and miss.

Yeah, and tape adapters suck too.

Count me among the many pissed off people who can't comprehend why on earth car companies haven't been putting simple AUX jacks - or 1/8" mini-jacks - for a decade or so now. Seriously... it's a five-cent piece and even the inexpensive cars cost $10k.

Thanks for all the input....much appreciated.

I'm a babe in the woods with this iPod stuff. It is amazing that I've not dabled with it before now.

One of the great appeals for me is going green...packageless....no cds and cases taking up valuable storage room in my car or home. The playlists and other features of iTunes is outstanding.

I am researching nice iPod speaker systems now as well.

Iacas....those prices are unreal...I'm definitely going by BestBuy next week and see what type of discounts I can get through my employer. My cell contract is up and I need to go ahead and add a line for my wife, anyway....now could be the time for the iPhone....

As far as car adapters....can the jacks be added if you stock stereo doesn't already have them??? Would I have to disable a feature such as the CD player?

It really depends on what vehicle you drive as to what you're options are. My only option was to replace my factory stereo with an aftermarket ipod-ready stereo.

Sounds expensive.

Hopefully I'll get over to Best Buy this week and see what my options are.

If you decide to get an iPhone wait until after the Apple WWDC next week to see what the new iPhone will be like. There will most likely be a 32 GB option announced that should be released in late June/early July, so that will help with the music storage issue a little.

The data app surcharge isn't bad if you find yourself using data frequently. I know I do. But we also get a discount, too, and have three lines with two iPhones and we pay under $100/month.

What plan is that? I have 4 lines, 1 iPhone (my daughters) and my bill is easily double that! And I mean easily double plus about $70 more. Seriously, is that plan/deal available? I'm in PA, I'll even switch to an Erie area code, you guys still 814? What's the discount for? Sign me up! Whoda thunk the entire world would need their own phone number??? Back to the OP, my Sister has the Ipod that looks like the Iphone, it's pretty cool. It does everything the Iphone does but make calls. Personally, I like to keep my phone simple, if my Ipod breaks down, no big deal, if my phone breaks, I always rush to get it replaced. Now if the ipod portion of the phone breaks..... then what do you do? Plus, I don't want to consume my phones battery with other crap.

I have both an iPod & an iPhone and very rarely use the iPod anymore. The phone part of the iPhone is not the best, not real easy to use while driving but the bluetooth in my truck negates that, but it is something to think about. The convenience of having the music with you all the time is great though. I didn't like carrying around a phone and the iPod & you sure don't want to keep anything valuable in your cars where I'm from so the iPhone fixed that for me. I always have to have my phone on me, so now I always have the music.

The iPod does get used on the weekend trips to the lake when I remember to bring it. It does work better with speaker docks (the iPhone will work on the Bose speakers, but it turns off the phone part in order to do so)

Thanks for all the replies.

Much appreciated info.

My wife offered to let me have her Shuffle if I get her a pink Nano. My plan is to get a waterproof case and earphones for the Shuffle for lapswimming. The Nano looks like it's custom made for what she wants.

I'm still teetering between iPhone and iPod.....right now I'm leaning toward the iPhone. I think it will be so handy. I'm a gimmick for new toys.

Gonna be able to run over to the store at the end of the week and look around at options.

Meanwhile....my 9 year old is going nuts when he hears us discuss new iPod gear. He's gonna nag me to death until he gets a new unit, too. I'm pushing him back to his birthday.

The ipod Touch seems to offer everything that the iphone does just without the phone part. That would seem to work if you aren't interested in getting a new phone. It also has wi-fi capabilites so you can do all of the apps thingies (I guess?), which is a lot of the appeal to the iphone for me.

Yes please do look at the touch.. its relly just an i phone without the phone.. the touch screen is fantastic, and you can go on TST anywhere you can get wifi!! While having both in one is nice, i have played with iphones before, and i cant put my finger on it, but i just dont like them. my opinion of course.

Anyone tried the Kindle feature for their iPhones?

Seems very handy. I'd love to always have a good book handy. I haven't tried it to see well it compares to the "real" Kindle.

    • You can pre-order an R50 here for pretty rapid shipping (these are back-ordered almost everywhere): https://www.playbetter.com/products/garmin-approach-r50-golf-launch-monitor-simulator?ghref=2301%3A700794. This is an affiliate purchase, and I'm willing to kick back lifetime ad-free Supporter membership here on TST or a 90-minute GEARS session for the cost of a regular member lesson (about 1/3 the cost). Also, I'll record a video myself soon when I get an R50.

    • Day 209 (27 Nov 24) - Easy session with the LW - short pitches replicating greens side up and downs. Finished up with the 7i and hard foam balls - making 1/2 to 3/4 swings with deliberately slowed tempo…from varied lies.
    • Yes, this is the 2024 model. DSG ruined what Callaway perfected for most golfers. A darn good 3 piece golf ball. Now it's a 2 piece cheap ball. To me a 2 piece ball is fine and a 3 piece budget ball is better. I prefer a slightly harder ball, something in the 65-75 compression range that will perform similar to the old Gamer. The Titleist tru-feel is pretty good. I planned on giving Maxfli straightfli a try.
