Hey guys, been workin on my game
My strong points are my wedges to my 7, hit them very well, my longer irons i have a tendency to pull, but i am working on that. If i miss my short irons i usually push them right. But i can work on all that and understand it. But I can not hit a driver, well i cant hit anything off the tee. I try driver different ones, 3 wood and hybrids. The problem is i slice a hybrid off the tee and then i hit it from the fairway or rough and i hit it fine. I think i am nuts here but any advice on how to keep the tee shot in the fairway besides aiming way left.

Makes two of us, Skates.

Just picked up golf again after a decade off the fairways( kids, stuff)
and have been lurking here for a while but whan I noticed this post I just had to register..

Play the iron ok but play drive, fairwaywood and hybrids waay to the right from the Tee. Like you I play hybrids and FW ok from the fairway but not from the Tee. I think I migh fool myself aligning/aiming but I have not found any cure yet.

If you are slicing, I'd say go to the range and try to hit hooks. I used to have a massive slice (aim at left tree line, end up in right rough), and I worked it out by just working on hitting hooks and draws at the range.

As one who has struggled mightily with this but finally (knock on wood) figured it out:

- lighten your grip, especially right hand (for righties);
- stronger grip (hands rotated clockwise on shaft);
- flat left wrist at impact;
- release the club (right hand rotates over left on follow-through).

Of these, the light grip helped the most. (Also try playing around with your grip--overlap, interlock, 10-finger, split grip, etc.)

Try to make a shallow/flat backswing, over do it to get used to the feeling. This will help with slicing.

Also, keep more weight on the back leg throughout the swing.

Ok some things to try there. Thanks guys.
Do not quite grasp the "shallow/flat" thing though. My broken English fails...

I just started the season again. I took a lesson last week to start things out -
3 things were improved upon and I am hitting all of clubs better then I ever have - including the big stick.

Tempo - keep it smooth, even
Grip - my grip got lazy and needed to be strengthened
Balance - I was able to improve my balance and stay in the shot

I'll bet if you choose one of those things to spot check - you will strike the ball better.
in my opinion - the tee box is just the tee box - same swing in the fairway or in the box.
hope that helps!

A common thing with me and long irons / woods / driver is the thought of having to "crush it" with these clubs. You know, since they are the distance clubs? So you need to hit em hard, right? Well, that is farthest from the truth. I find if you slow it down and take nice and easy swing, you'll have better results.

thanks guys
I have to say when i get in my backswing i have this feeling of trying to murder the ball, which is most likely causing my slicing or making it worse. Even when i swing lightly i slice. Played 9 today and shot a 44, I think i hit 1 fairway.

i agree with madcityscott on Lightening my grip and releasing the club. Those two help me the most.

    • I have an update… I don't have much of a response, because the fact that they would ADD the numbers for the lead and trail shoulder together… I mean, wow. I was giving them too much credit. Nobody would think to assume they were doing THAT. That's beyond comical. One of the biomechanists I talked to put it this way: "So if I squatted down and went from 180 to 90 deg knee angle, then I would say 180 deg range of motion because I have two knees?" I'd type more (maybe), but honestly, I'm laughing a bit too hard. 🤣 Update: Mini Manavian blocked me on Instagram, so I cannot see his post showing Bryson with about 50° of range of motion (with a driver) from P4 to P7, and 75° only if you go out to the mid-follow-through. What a terrible loss for me. 😉
    • Thanks, interesting to read. The swing is definitely very timing dependent. I hit it consistently I guess but consistently bad.
    • I've shot 91-74 on the same day before. Couple of years ago played a two round tournament on Bethpage Black. I shot 72 in the first round and 90 in the second. First round I played very well. Second round I played okay, but had about 5 shots that hit the lips of bunkers and bounced down into them. A couple of those wound up in footprints - I was unamused - and I failed to get them out. Anyway - lots of bunkers and my bunker play isn't great and then add a couple of footprints and me getting pretty tired and it added up to a lot.  Only you can really tell though what's causing the variance. It might be that your swing is very timing dependent and when it's timed well you play well and when it's not then it goes all over the place. In that case, some lessons and working on your swing could be the key. If it's more that you tend to feel like you hit it fairly consistently, but you have days where the shots come off and days where they don't, then that's more likely a course management issue. If that's what you need to work on, then you could read Lowest Score Wins and build a plan of attack based on that.  Rest assured though that a pretty big range from high to low is fairly common. Even PGA Tour players often have 18-20 shot spreads from best to worst rounds in a season. It's a common affliction among golfers.
