They removed all the rough. There's no rough to "grow" (or cut) for the women.

There's basically fairways, greens, bunkers, tees, and waste areas.

Did they remove the rough as a redesign for these two championships?

I just hope that the winning score isn't any better than 5 under par. I like to see players struggle in the US Open - it makes it fun to watch.

No. They removed the rough as part of the redesign.

Maybe this thread should be in another forum but since it's about the course more than the golf I'm not sure.

It will be interesting to see how it works out with the men and women playing consecutive weeks.

Things I am curious enough to watch for:

Will be a different look with only two grass heights. Fairways and greens. No "rough" as we usually think of it.

BTW. I have thought for a long time that there should be more "native areas" on the courses that we play instead of wall to wall mowing.

Well knowing Donald Ross, if you don't end up on the right side of the green, you better get lucky or you are looking at bogey or worse really really fast. Also, I like they are going fairway to more natural hazards. Which could be good or bad. I've been down there this year, in Pinehurst. I've had the ball end up the waste area looking areas. I didn't play #2, but you get a ball up next to that natural puffs of grass that can grow in the waste land. If that is blocking your way, you are NOT advancing the ball forward, or you might break a wrist. There is some NASTY areas you can get into. So, I like it. I am sure with those greens, and the length of the course, it will be a good challenge. Missing the fairway wont be consistent conditions. Its like rolling the dice, you might end up with a clean lie. You might end up SOL. Its not like knowing your are dealing with 6 inches of rough. So that it self can put pressure on a golfer. I think they will have to adapt more than usual this year.

Thanks.  Missed it the first time around for some reason.

I imagine that knowing that there wouldn't be the normal US Open penal rough, helped with the decision to play the women there too.

That we may in fact see a womens version of the masters played on the same course either the week before or after the original event.
