I have been playing golf very sporadically for about 10 years. Over the past 12 months, I finally started playing regularly.

I got my clubs 10 years ago as a "complete beginners set." It came with 3-pw, + driver, 3 wood, 5 wood, and putter. They were a set of Wilson Prostaff OS with graphite shafts. Heres a link to similar on ebay I think:
http://catalog.ebay.com/Wilson?_fcls...5076431&_tab=2

Anyway, I upgraded my driver to a new Taylormade burner driver, and noticed an instant difference. I went from shooting in the 120s to shooting in the low 100s.

My question: Will I notice a similar difference if I switch to better irons? Or do clubs really matter that much at my level?

I would take a lesson from a pro and ask for their opinion. I did a few years back and was told that I should be swinging stiff shaft instead of regular. I changed and my score only improved slightly. Track where you are loosing stokes. You might find that you are loosing more in the short game and putting where different/better irons will not help as much as short game practice or some additional wedges or a better putter.

But, you could have a lot of putts because your approach shots are 30 feet from the hole.

A quote from Kris
...is that college bball really isn't "lower tier". The better teams have their rosters filled with guys who could play in the NBA. hell, guys used to come straight from high school to the NBA. I really don't think there's much of a difference skill-wise between the two.

Granted. I know that my score is closely related to short game performance. I started tracking shots inside of 100 years ago and discovered that it often took 4-5 strokes to hole out from inside 100 when I was 30+ HCI. Working on PCP (pitch, chip, putt) brought it down significantly. In the scenario above, I worked on long putts to make sure I could get most of those down in 2.

I guess my main point was that a 30+ players can shave more stokes in the short game than iron play. Secondly that the advice of a pro is invaluable. Just my humble little opinion though.

New technology promotes improvements in your game. I read somewhere that golfers are hitting their clubs by 10+% further now than they were 10 years ago. So, I believe that new equipment will help give you distance and accuracy.

HOWEVER, if you have a bad swing, it's not going to change too much. Often, it's the golfer who needs the "upgrade" not the equipment.

If you have a good and stable swing, then picking up new clubs will help. If your swing is flawed, then you may not do the new clubs much justice.
